DEFINITION: This position is responsible for driving and operating fire apparatus in the response to fire and other emergency incidents.
REPORTS TO: The Fire Captain assigns work in terms of very general instructions.
- Safely responds to fire, rescue, and EMS scenes; provides fire protection to crew on fire and rescue scenes; provides assistance to crews on EMS scenes.
- Maintains a working knowledge of the area of assignment; maintains working knowledge of pump operations and basic fire ground operations.
- Instruct fire personnel in safe and proper operation and maintenance of all apparatus and vehicles
- Performs maintenance checks and inventories to ensure readiness and working condition of assigned apparatus.
- Maintains the required level of physical fitness.
- Participates in public education events.
- Participates in the hydrant maintenance program.
- Assists in the maintenance of the fire station building and grounds.
- Participates in continuing education activities.
- Assists with engine company business inspections.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Education and Experience:- Candidate must be currently serving as a Rocky Mount Fire Department Senior Firefighter at the date the Job Opportunities Bulletin is posted.
- Must possess a valid Class B North Carolina Driver’s License.
- Candidate must be a Certified Firefighter through the North Carolina Fire and Rescue Commission.
- Candidate must be at the minimum a North Carolina State Certified Emergency Medical Technician - Basic.
- Candidate must be certified as Hazardous Materials Responder Level 1.
- Candidates must be a Certified Child Passenger Safety Technician through successful completion of the NHSTA Child Passenger Safety Program.
- Candidate must be certified as a Technical Rescuer and Technical Rescuer Vehicle Rescue through the NC Fire Rescue Commission.
- Candidates must be trained to at least the National Incident Management System IS 700, IS 800, IS 100, and IS 200
- Candidates must possess both the Driver Operator Certification in Aerial and Fire Pumps.
- Candidates must have successfully completed all classes and tests outlined in Section VII Professional Development SOG Guide VII.3 Fire Engineer.
- Candidates must not have been demoted or suspended for more than 12 hours if on shift, or 8 hours if working an 8-5 schedule, as result of a disciplinary action in the two years immediately preceding the publication date of the job posting for the position.
- Candidates must have received and maintained an overall rating of “Meets Standards” or higher on the most recent annual performance appraisal.

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS: The Fire Captain assigns work in terms of very general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures and the nature and propriety of the final results.
GUIDELINES: Guidelines include department standard operating procedures; the City Emergency Response Plan; OSHA regulations; NFPA standards; federal and state laws; local ordinances; equipment operation manuals; and hazardous materials and evacuation guidelines. These guidelines require judgment, selection, and interpretation in application.
COMPLEXITY: The work consists of varied duties in the operation of assigned fire apparatus and equipment. Life-threatening situations contribute to the complexity of the position.
SCOPE AND EFFECT: The purpose of this position is to operate assigned fire apparatus and equipment. Success in this position contributes to the safety of life and property.
PERSONAL CONTACTS: Contacts are typically with representatives of other emergency response agencies, co-workers, and members of the general public.
PURPOSE OF CONTACTS: Contacts are typically to give or exchange information, resolve problems, and provide services.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Perform heavy work with ability to participate in firefighting and fitness activities; includes ability to routinely perform walking, running, stooping, kneeling, squatting, crawling, climbing, lifting of fire equipment, pulling of fire hose, manipulation of nozzles, carrying, reaching, and balancing activities.
MENTAL DEMANDS:Employees are regularly required to use written and oral communication skills; read and interpret data, information and documents; analyze and solve problems; use math and mathematical reasoning; observe and interpret situations; learn and apply new information or skills; and interact with City staff, other organizations and the public.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work is typically performed in a fire station and at the scene of emergency incidents. The employee is exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts, irritating chemicals, occasional cold or inclement weather, and dangerous conditions associated with fire and other emergency scenes. The work requires the use of specialized protective equipment.
