Job summary

The Nature Conservancy seeks a field data assistant to support ecological monitoring in northern Arizona. You will collect data in forested environments, measure fuels and vegetation, and record results on handheld tablets.

Travel across northern Arizona and occasional trips elsewhere in the U.S. may be required. Candidates should have an associate degree and strong time management, independence, and data handling skills.

Qualifications

Associate’s degree in natural resources, environmental studies, or equivalent combination of education and 6 months’ experience
Experience managing and prioritizing tasks from multiple sources
Experience working with computers and related software, including Windows, Microsoft Office (Outlook, Excel and Word), Box, Teams, web browsers and internet research
Field experience desired
Multi-language skills and multi-cultural or cross-cultural experience appreciated
Ability to assist with program budget development and monitoring
Ability to work independently and exercise independent judgment
Time management skills
Experience using Geographic Positioning Systems (GPS) hardware and/or software
Experience with detail-oriented and numerical tasks, specifically collection of ecological field data
Experience working in a metrics driven culture
Valid driver’s license required
Compliance with TNC’s Auto Safety Program and completion of a Vehicle Use Agreement
Successful completion of The Nature Conservancy’s background screening process

Responsibilities

Assist science and program staff in collecting ecological field monitoring data in pre- and post-fire forested environments of northern Arizona
Measure fuels and forest structure, including tree diameters, using various equipment
Record detailed measurement information into handheld tablets
Participate in Arizona business unit and TNC-wide meetings and efforts
Complete administrative functions such as performance reviews, expense reports and timecards accurately and on time
Maintain project records
Travel throughout northern Arizona and occasionally elsewhere in Arizona and the U.S. for meetings, trainings and retreats
Work in variable weather, remote locations, hazardous terrain and physically demanding circumstances
Occasionally work long hours, weekends and holidays
Occasionally lift, carry, push or pull 25 pounds
