Job summary

The Commonwealth of Massachusetts is administering the 2027 Boston Fire Captain Promotional Examination to create an eligible list for Boston Fire Department vacancies. Qualifications

• Must be a Boston Fire Department employee with permanent civil service status in the title of Fire Lieutenant by the examination date.
• Must have served at least one year since appointment and performed the duties of the eligible titles.
• A combination of temporary and permanent service from a certification can be applied toward meeting the one-year requirement.

Responsibilities

• What a Fire Captain does under supervision, in conformance with Fire Department rules and regulations, including apparatus and non-apparatus operations, incident command, size-up, ventilation, entry, search and rescue, and reports.
• Responsibilities also include information management, inspections, policy enforcement, staffing, and professional development.
