Qualifications

Education and Experience: Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor's degree.

Substitution of a Specific Associate's Degree for the Required Bachelor's Degree: Graduation from an accredited college, university, or technical institute with an associate's degree in fire-protection engineering technology, fire science, engineering technology, and/or construction technology may be substituted for the required Bachelor's degree.

Substitution of Experience for Education: Qualifying full-time experience in fire prevention, suppression, engineering, architecture, plan review, construction management, arson investigation, inspections, or related trades may substitute for the education on a year-for-year basis, up to four years.

OR

Graduation with an associate's degree and one year of relevant full-time experience in the above fields.

Necessary Special Qualifications: Possess a valid motor vehicle operator license.

Examination Method: Education and Experience, 100%, for Preferred Service positions.

Overview

Summary: Under close supervision, responsible for fire and building codes inspection work of average difficulty; performs related work as required.

Distinguishing Features: This is an entry-level class in the Fire and Building Code Inspector series. Inspects building structures for fire hazards and code violations. Employees in this class are trained and supervised, unlike the independent Fire and Building Code Inspector 2.

Responsibilities

  • Train to inspect and witness installation/testing of fire protection systems.
  • Learn to inspect foundations, floors, walls, roofs, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems.
  • Conduct annual fire and building code compliance inspections.
  • Inspect blasting sites and materials for compliance.
  • Conduct inspections prompted by complaints.
  • Follow-up inspections to ensure violations are corrected.
