Job summary

Northrop Grumman Aeronautics Systems has an opening for a Maintenance Mechanic 3 focused on Fire and Life Safety Systems on site at our Melbourne, Florida location

Job Duties Include


  • Perform maintenance, troubleshooting, and repairs on fire and life safety systems, including:


    • Fire alarm systems

    • Fire sprinklers, fire pumps and controllers, and fire extinguishers

    • Dry-agent and pre-action systems

    • HALON, VESDA, ANSUL/cafeteria hoods

    • BDA/life safety radio systems

    • Fire suppression systems for fueled-aircraft hangars (AFFF)

    • HAZMAT handling systems and chemical lockers


  • Diagnose fire alarm system issues; perform on-site emergency troubleshooting and programming modifications; oversee repairs performed by authorized fire alarm vendors

  • Identify code-compliance and non-conformance issues; prepare accurate, timely service reports

  • Perform fire alarm preventive maintenance (PMs); schedule fire alarm repairs and inspections; conduct appropriate follow-up

  • Manage vendors in accordance with applicable codes and owner limitations, including:


    • Developing scopes of work

    • Soliciting proposals

    • Arranging outages and site access

    • Overseeing daily vendor activities

    • Ensuring quality and timely completion of work


  • Maintain detailed knowledge of local and national codes applicable to fire alarm systems (including NFPA 72) and ensure systems adhere to those codes

  • Maintain accurate and complete documentation for all service work orders in accordance with company processes

  • Perform repairs and maintenance in plant and office facilities, including work in one or more maintenance trades (e.g., carpentry, plumbing, painting, machine and equipment repair, electrical, sheet metal fabrication, welding)

  • Conduct routine, periodic, and special inspections to determine repair and maintenance needs to prevent breakdowns of facilities, machinery, and equipment

  • Use hand and power tools; test, inspect, troubleshoot, and repair machines and equipment using blueprints, sketches, layouts, wiring diagrams, drawings, and specifications

  • Adhere to company service and safety standards and standardized processes

  • Maintain spare parts stock to support timely completion of emergency and routine service calls; provide feedback on stock changes to improve first-call completion rates

  • Communicate regularly with management to ensure service requests and system repair/inspection activities meet site needs and expectations

  • Obtain and maintain manufacturer and industry certifications as required by management

  • Maintain professional, cooperative relationships with employees, managers, vendors, and customers to promote morale, productivity, and continuous improvement

  • Abide by all company rules, processes, and procedures, and perform other duties as assigned


Basic Qualifications


  • Minimum of a High School Diploma or GED with 4 years of experience working with fire and life safety systems as listed in the Job Duties section

  • Minimum of 4 years of experience using Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS) to receive, document, and close out work orders

  • NICET certification

  • FASA/BASA certification

  • Must be able to transfer or obtain and maintain a final adjudicated Top-Secret U.S. Government security clearance and any program accesses required for the position within a reasonable period of time, as determined by the company

  • Must possess a valid Florida State driver's license or must acquire a Florida driver’s license within 30 days from the time of hire

  • Ability to read drawings, schematics, and interpret technical details

  • General mechanical aptitude and ability to perform hands-on maintenance work

  • Basic understanding of electricity and plumbing

  • Basic proficiency with computers and common business applications (e.g., Outlook, Teams, SharePoint)

  • Ability and willingness to occasionally work off-shifts and weekends as required; position may be flexed to second shift

  • Ability to regularly lift 50+ lbs; climb ladders; reach overhead; bend and kneel; use both hands; and work in environments with extreme temperatures and humidity

  • Ability to safely operate large box trucks in the 10,001-26,000 lb range


Preferred Qualifications


  • Active, in-scope DoD Secret or Top-Secret/SCI clearance

  • Eight or more years of directly related fire systems experience

  • Experience working in classified spaces and/or in engineering and manufacturing environments

  • Vocational and/or post-secondary education in a relevant trade or discipline

  • Experience with the Maximo CMMS platform

  • Experience handling and moving heavy equipment (e.g., pallet jack, wheel truck, forklifts)

  • Team-oriented attitude and willingness to assist with tasks outside the primary fire/life safety trade, including plumbing, HVAC, electrical, carpentry, painting, furniture moves, escorting, etc

  • Experience with elevator maintenance

  • Experience in other trades relevant to facilities maintenance

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills

  • Strong time management and organizational skills

  • Demonstrated positive customer service experience


Primary Level Salary Range: $57,500.00 - $95,900.00


The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills and current market conditions.


Depending on the position, employees may be eligible for overtime, shift differential, and a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
