Job Overview

The Fire Alarm System Mechanic inspects, tests, maintains, and repairs installed fire alarm and suppression systems in accordance with manufacturer specifications and National Fire Protection Association standards. Responsibilities include visual inspections, component replacement, testing initiating and signal circuits, detectors, system transmitters, pressure gauge checks, and recharging or replacing suppression system containers.

Pay Rate: $43.38 per hour

Responsibilities
  • Perform fire alarm duties necessary to maintain buildings and structures in good repair.
  • Collaborate with other Mechanics to share specialized skills and experience related to fire systems maintenance and repair, including occasional assistance to the Sprinkler Team.
  • Install, inspect, test, maintain, and repair installed fire alarm detection and suppression systems in accordance with manufacturer specifications and NFPA.
  • Inspect fire alarm equipment visually and replace defective components.
  • Test initiating and signal circuits, detectors, and system transmitters and make needed repairs.
  • Prepare NFPA forms for fire alarm testing and inspections.
  • Test and inspect fire extinguishers.
  • Work with subcontractors, coordinating and interpreting wiring diagrams to locate failures.
  • Plan and layout work from blueprints, drawings, models, and written instructions.
  • Use hand tools, portable power tools, and standard measuring instruments.
  • Plan, organize, and meet deadlines, handling multiple tasks in a single day.
  • Coordinate with trade and warehouse personnel to identify materials, parts, assemblies, and requisitions needed for job tasks.
  • Submit and support outage requests as required, including alternate schedule work.
  • Respond to emergency site maintenance events.
  • Inspect and diagnose problems to determine corrective repairs.
  • Perform on‑call and preventive maintenance duties as necessary.
  • Conduct periodic inventories and prepare material requisitions for replacement items.
  • Operate company or customer motor vehicles and other equipment safely.
  • Execute lower‑classified duties such as file maintenance, workspace cleanup, warehouse space maintenance, and telephone answering as required.
  • Support other department staff and trade groups in daily operations as needed or directed.
  • Adhere to established safety and personnel policies and standard operating procedures.
  • Work overtime as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Mandatory Requirements
  • At least two (2) years of experience actively working on fire alarm and suppression systems.
  • Possess or obtain a NICET I in Fire Alarm Systems within twelve months of hire.
  • Possess or obtain a NICET II in Fire Alarm Systems within eighteen months of hire.
  • Demonstrated ability to install, troubleshoot, and repair fire alarm systems and addressable control equipment with minimal supervision.
  • Extensive knowledge of applicable codes and standards (e.g., NFPA, UFC).
  • Working knowledge of solid‑state and conventional control circuitry.
  • Basic mathematical competency as required.
  • Extensive knowledge of hand and power tools.
  • Professional, courteous communication with diverse individuals.
  • Mature judgment and ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • U.S. citizenship.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain required intelligence‑community clearance.
  • Pass pre‑hire background and drug screening.
  • Valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working with VESDA and FM200 systems.
  • NICET III or higher certification.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds and team lift 75 pounds.
