Job summary

Texas Materials, a CRH company, seeks a heavy equipment operator to work with laborers on construction projects. Primary duties include operating blade and coordinating with the team to meet daily production goals.

You will perform pre-start checks, follow safety rules, and maintain equipment. Experience with dozers, loaders, excavators, backhoes, GPS grading, and earthwork is preferred. Must be 18+ and travel as needed.

Qualifications

• Must have knowledge of heavy equipment and safe operation.
• Prefered experience with Dozer, Loader, Excavator and Backhoe.
• Strong earth grading background and ability to match blue tops.
• 2+ GPS grading experience or exposure.

Responsibilities

• Operate heavy equipment including blade, shuttle buggy, loaders, excavators, dozers, graders, and backhoes.
• Follow manuals and daily equipment checklists for each machine.
• Coordinate with Project Manager/Foreperson on daily specs and safety.
• Perform daily pre-start checks and ensure equipment is in good running order.
• Communicate with supervisor about production, materials, and truck movements.
• Keep equipment clean and accessible for easy inspection and movement.
• Follow directions and perform other duties as assigned.

Position Overview

This position works hand in hand with the laborer position to complete jobs. While the position primarily consists of operating heavy machinery (Blade), there are also laborer job functions that need to be completed as necessary.

Key Responsibilities

• Ability to operate various pieces of heavy equipment, including blade, shuttle buggy, loaders, excavators, dozers, graders, backhoes, etc.
• Be familiar with and incorporate information derived from the manuals for the individual equipment being operated.
• Be familiar with the equipment and Daily Equipment Checklist
• Communicate with Project Manager/Foreperson as to the daily job specifications; operate the equipment in a safe and responsible manner.
• Perform daily pre-start procedures, i.e. note the service due date, check fluid levels and make sure the equipment to be used is in good running order, complete Daily Equipment Checklist
• Discuss with supervisor the anticipated production, type of materials being moved, number of trucks, etc.
• Be aware of other equipment working on the project and coordinate to work with the other equipment.
• When possible, leave the equipment in a place that is readily accessible to the Equipment Mover.
• Keep the equipment clean. Wiping down equipment not only promotes a positive public image but enables the operator to inspect the equipment close range.
• Ability to follow directions.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
• Ability to perform the essential job functions with or without reasonable accommodation.

Qualifications

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.

Education/Experience

• Be able to communicate appropriately with direct reports, co-workers, supervisors, and the public.
• Be knowledgeable of materials and equipment needed to perform tasks.
• Related experience in the construction field preferred.

Work Requirements

• Must be 18 years or older.
• Must pass pre-employment physical, drug screen and criminal background check.
• Strict adherence to safety requirements and procedures as outlined in the Employee Handbook.
• Willingness to work in a team environment and assist co-workers or supervisors with other duties as required.
• Must maintain current driver’s license that meets state requirements.
• Must be willing to travel and work away from home when required.
• Must be willing to work nights and weekends when necessary.
• Individuals are required to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) in designated operations and production areas as stated by OSHA and/or MSHA. Protective equipment that may be required, but not limited to, for this position is: Face Shield, Safety (hard toe) Shoes, and Coveralls.
• Compliance with all OSHA and/or MSHA regulations.

Knowledge/Skill Requirements

• Previous knowledge of heavy equipment desired.
• Prefered knowledge of Dozer, Loader, Excavator & Backhoe experience
• Strong background in earth grading be able to match blue tops
• 2+ GPS grading, with minimum experience

Physical Requirements

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

• Job requires climbing, stooping, bending, squatting, frequent lifting of extensions chutes, stretching, sitting/driving, shifting gears, and covering/uncovering load when applicable.
• Able to stand, walk, use hands and fingers to manipulate objects or controls, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, talk and hear.
• May require sitting for extended periods of time.
• Vision abilities (with correction) include close, distance, peripheral, depth, and the ability to focus.
• Must be able to lift hood of truck unassisted; up to 50 lbs. on an on-going basis.
• Able to climb in and out of truck 3-4 steps (elevated 4+ feet into cab). (Could be in and out of truck 20-30 times per day).

Work Environment

• Able to work in all weather conditions.
• While performing the duties of the job, the employee may be occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles and toxic or caustic chemicals.
• The employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts; high, precarious places; outside weather conditions; and risk of electrical shock or burn.
• The noise level in some areas of the work environment may be loud, but is typically moderate.
