Briefs Finance is seeking a full-time Financial Writer to craft market news for briefs.co and the Market Briefs newsletter from Detroit. You will write and edit stories on stocks, the economy, the Fed, earnings and crypto, and contribute to daily sections before the 7:30 am ET deadline.
Ideal candidates have 2+ years writing about markets or economics, can explain complex topics simply, and use AI tools like Claude or ChatGPT to speed work while preserving your voice.
We are hiring a financial writer to write market news for briefs.co and sections of the daily Market Briefs newsletter, in-office in downtown Detroit, at $75,000 to $90,000 plus profit share after year one.
We pay at the top of the market on purpose, because we want the person who takes this seat to stay in it, and we expect to hire near the top of that range. Profit share has typically paid between $5,000 and $10,000 a quarter, with no ceiling on it.
Heads up before you apply.
In short...
Most financial writing is aimed at people who already have money. Ours is for the people trying to build it. Briefs Finance built one of the top five financial podcasts in the world, then we made investment research and tools that used to cost thousands a year available to anyone, with an interface that lets a reader ask a question about an investment opportunity and get a real answer.
Your job is to write the words that bring millions of those readers in the door every month, at a pace that's only possible because we build with AI instead of talking about it. We think this is some of the most exciting work happening in Detroit, and you would be at the center of it.
Do you love the markets? Do you love writing? Do you want to publish more real work in a month than most journalists publish in a year?
If so, keep reading. This is the job for you.
We're hiring a full-time Financial Writer to support everything we publish. Articles on briefs.co, Market Briefs, and whatever else is going out that day. This is a writing job, not a strategy job. If you want to spend your day on the markets and on the page instead of in meetings, this is the seat.
You write and edit news on stocks, the economy, the Fed, earnings and crypto for briefs.co, and you help the desk hit its daily checkpoints. You write sections of the daily newsletter and cover the whole thing when our Senior Financial Editor is out. It goes out every weekday at 7:30 am ET, so parts of this job start early.
Our writing reads like a story, not like a filing. Plain English, credible, easy to scroll. You will get direction on this early and often, and we expect you to have it down cold within a couple of months.
As for AI, you use Claude, ChatGPT, or whatever gets the job done to research faster, draft cleaner and check your own work, and you keep getting better at it. What ships still has to sound like you wrote it, because our readers can tell.
Then there's whatever the day needs. Long-form pieces, advertorials, a fast follow-up when one story takes off. Small team, so the useful person is the one who picks up the thing that has to get done.
You don't need to be a finance expert on day one. You do need to genuinely like the markets and learn fast, and a background in finance is a real advantage. If you are not familiar with basic financial concepts like inflation, this is not the role for you.
You can write about money so a normal person understands it. Two or more years writing about markets, business, or economics is the target. If you have less than that and your clips are excellent, apply anyway and show us.
You use AI every day and you are honest about what it is good at, and about what it isn't. Claude, ChatGPT, whatever gets the job done. You can spot AI-sounding prose from across the room, because our readers can, and you know that a model being confident is not the same as a model being right.
You are fast and you are careful, both at once. Volume does not scare you and it does not make you sloppy.
You take an edit well and you only need it once. When you get a note on voice or accuracy, it does not come back a second time.
You write things down. Deadlines, commitments, what you learned when something broke. You say something before a deadline slips, not after.
Nice to have, but not required. A Series 65 or similar credential, which we will sponsor. Published bylines at a finance outlet. GA4, Ahrefs, or an email platform like Customer.io.
We are on a mission to help 1.3 billion people be better with money. We do it through a top-five financial podcast and YouTube show, a free daily newsletter called Market Briefs, a paid research and education platform called Briefs Pro, and AI-powered stock research tools.
