A Day in the Life of the Director of Finance
As Director of Finance, you'll be the go-to financial partner for business leaders, providing the analysis, forecasting, and reporting that help them understand performance and act on opportunities. You'll dig into results, costs, margins, and working capital, build models for new initiatives and pricing decisions, and lead the forecasting and budgeting cycle. You'll also strengthen financial processes, dashboards, and ERP reporting tools. Your work will give leadership the visibility and confidence they need to drive profitable growth.
Responsibilities include:
- Analyze financial and operating results to identify trends, opportunities, and areas needing attention
- Translate financial data into clear, actionable insights for business leaders
- Build financial models and analyses for new initiatives, investments, and pricing decisions
- Evaluate the financial impact of proposed business decisions
- Track key business metrics and KPIs and develop reporting that improves visibility into performance
- Prepare recurring financial reports, management summaries, and leadership presentations
- Analyze monthly results, explain variances against plan and prior periods, and support month-end close reporting
- Coordinate financial forecasting and maintain rolling outlooks throughout the year
- Support the annual operating plan and budgeting process, working with department leaders on assumptions
- Monitor spending and operating results against plan and maintain models for forecasting and scenario analysis
- Analyze product and operating costs, gross margins, inventory, and working capital
- Evaluate pricing and margin trends and support cost-efficiency initiatives
- Review capital expenditure requests and provide supporting financial analysis
- Identify opportunities to simplify, automate, and improve finance processes
- Enhance financial reporting tools, dashboards, and BI capabilities
- Support the effective use of ERP and financial reporting systems and maintain strong financial controls and data integrity
- Serve as a financial resource and partner to leaders across the organization
- Communicate financial concepts clearly to both financial and non-financial audiences
- Provide guidance and support to members of the Finance team
- Contribute to special projects and strategic initiatives as needed
Requirements and Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, Business, Economics, or a related field
- 8+ years of progressive experience in finance, FP&A, accounting, or a related discipline
- Proven experience with financial analysis, forecasting, budgeting, and management reporting
- Strong understanding of income statements, balance sheets, cash flow, working capital, and financial performance metrics
- Experience analyzing costs, margins, inventory, and operating expenses
- Advanced financial modeling and Excel skills
- Experience with ERP and financial reporting systems (NetSuite or similar preferred)
- Experience with Power BI or another business intelligence/reporting platform preferred
- Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities while meeting deadlines
