Job summary

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance or related field required; master's preferred.
  • 4 to 6 years of experience in financial analysis and reporting; healthcare/insurance a plus.
  • Experience leading projects and coordinating cross-functional teams.
  • Knowledge of GAAP and regulatory reporting (CMS, NAIC, state departments) preferred.
  • CPA, CMA, CFM or related certification preferred.
  • Advanced Excel and financial systems proficiency (SAP, Oracle, ACTIVA, PeopleSoft).

Responsibilities

  • Oversee decision-support oriented financial reporting for a division or segment.
  • Prepare and publish financial or regulatory reports for management and external parties.
  • Identify areas needing additional analysis and investigate issues.
  • Review financial information for accuracy; edit and revise as needed.
  • Draft department policies and procedures to ensure internal controls.
  • Interface with senior management and external contacts on reporting and controls.
  • Manage deadlines and potential staff assignments on projects.
  • Assist with special projects as requested.

Job description

Join Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan as a Financial Coordinator and play a key role in driving financial insights that support strategic business decisions. In this role, you will analyze and report on financial performance, including revenues, expenses, trends, and program profitability across business segments. You will also develop financial models and analyses that help guide future business initiatives. Working independently and collaboratively on cross‑functional projects, you’ll contribute to meaningful financial outcomes while managing multiple priorities in a fast‑paced environment.

DEPARTMENTAL PREFERENCES:
  • Healthcare, insurance, or similarly regulated accounting and financial reporting experience preferred.
  • Experience preparing or reviewing journal entries, account reconciliations, financial statements, regulatory reports, close activities, and financial analysis related to premiums, claims, provider payments, fixed assets, administrative expenses, settlement, membership, billing, and revenue preferred.
  • Knowledge of GAAP and regulatory reporting requirements, including CMS, NAIC, state insurance departments, FEP, and external audit or reporting stakeholders preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze financial data, identify reporting gaps or anomalies, conduct independent investigations, and recommend corrective or additional analysis preferred.
  • Experience drafting, updating, or maintaining departmental procedures, financial controls, or internal control documentation preferred.
  • Ability to collaborate with finance, actuarial, underwriting, claims, operations, senior leadership, and external contacts on reporting, controls, process improvement, and project work preferred.
  • CPA, CMA, CFM, or related certification preferred. Advanced proficiency with Excel and financial systems such as SAP, Oracle, ACTIVA, or PeopleSoft preferred.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  1. Oversees decision support oriented financial reporting for a division, customer or segment that may include linking financial information from various sources to provide meaningful financial reports or to assure appropriate data reconciliation. Financial data may include financial statements detail, corporate, division and cost center BPR information, cost allocation information, general ledger transaction activity, settlement activity, membership, billing and revenue activity, external benchmark data and external audit findings.
  2. Prepares and publishes various financial or regulatory reports and/or statements for management outside the department and/or parties’ external to BCBSM (e.g. auditors, customers, providers, BCBSA, FEP, NAIC, OFIS, Standard & Poor’s, and AM Best).
  3. Identifies, based on information in financial or regulatory reports, areas where additional analysis is needed and investigates these issues independently.
  4. May review financial information prepared by other financial staff members and customers for accuracy and completeness. Information may include budgets, business cases, impact studies, audit findings, footnotes and regulatory schedules. Edits, corrects and revises as appropriate.
  5. Drafts policies and procedures for department and/or division to help assure clarity in department and/or divisional practices and adequate internal controls.
  6. Interfaces with various departments, senior management and individuals’ external to BCBSM. Represents leadership staff at meetings in their absence.
  7. Responsible for assignments that frequently involves strict deadlines.
  8. May have staff assigned to them as it relates to project work.
  9. Assists with special projects and any other duties or assignments as requested by management.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
  1. Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Finance or related field required. Master’s Degree preferred.
  2. Four (4) to six (6) years’ experience in related field with extensive background in financial analysis and reporting (internal/external). Experience in healthcare or insurance industry is considered a plus.
  3. Experience in leading projects, coordinating efforts that involve other people and demonstrated leadership skills.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

1. Certification (CPA, CMA, and CFM) preferred.

  3. Subject matter expert with high degree of technical expertise in area of specialty (e.g., GAAP and SAP accounting, FEP regulations, cost accounting, etc.).
  4. Ability to work independently, within a team environment and with multiple priorities.
  5. Ability to effectively interface with various levels of management internally and as well as contacts outside the organization.
  6. Comprehensive knowledge of financial operations including functions, activities and systems.
  7. Proficient in current industry standard PC applications and systems (e.g., Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Access).
  8. General knowledge of Oracle.
  9. Other related skills and/or abilities may be required to perform this job.
