About Saddlehill Controller to manage our end-to-end financial operations, bookkeeping, and full-lifecycle HR and payroll functions.

Position Summary

The Controller oversees the financial health and administrative operations of Saddlehill Winery & Farmhouse Kitchen. This role bridges financial management (bookkeeping, reporting, cash flow) and human resources management (payroll, benefits administration, onboarding, and offboarding). The ideal candidate is a proactive problem-solver with strong accounting expertise and HR generalist experience in the hospitality or beverage industry.

Key Responsibilities
Financial Operations & Bookkeeping
  • Manage all general ledger accounting, accounts payable (AP), accounts receivable (AR), and month-end/year-end closing procedures.
  • Prepare accurate and timely financial statements, including profit and loss (P&L) statements, balance sheets, and cash flow reports.
  • Maintain cost accounting for winery production, market and on-site hospitality inventory
  • Perform monthly bank reconciliations and track cash flow across all business entities.
  • Collaborate with external CPAs for annual tax preparation and compliance audits.
HR & Payroll Administration
  • Process bi-weekly payroll for all full-time and seasonal staff, ensuring proper tip-pooling calculations and tax withholdings.
  • Manage full-cycle employee onboarding (background checks, I-9 compliance, orientation) and offboarding (final paychecks, exit documentation).
  • Oversee employee benefits administration, including healthcare enrollment, 401(k), paid time off (PTO) tracking, and worker's compensation.
  • Maintain accurate employee records and ensure full compliance with federal, state, and local labor laws.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for employee payroll and benefits inquiries.
Qualifications & Skills
  • Experience: 5+ years of accounting/finance experience, with direct experience handling full-cycle HR and payroll. Hospitality, restaurant, or winery experience is strongly preferred.
  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or related field.
  • Software: Proficiency with accounting platforms (e.g., QuickBooks Desktop/Online) and payroll systems (e.g., Gusto, ADP, Paychex). Familiarity with restaurant/winery Point-of-Sale (POS) systems (e.g., Toast, Commerce7) is a plus.
  • Skills: Strong understanding of GAAP, labor compliance, benefits administration, and cost control. High degree of discretion and confidentiality.
