Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced and entrepreneurial Controller to lead our accounting operations within our growing apparel / wholesale company. This role will play a critical part in standing up and building the accounting function for a new or expanding division, including designing processes, implementing systems, and hiring a high-performing team from the ground up. The Controller will oversee all financial reporting, maintain strong internal controls, manage inventory accounting, and support strategic decision-making. The ideal candidate brings deep knowledge of product-based businesses and thrives in a build-and-scale environment.

Key Responsibilities

• Oversee the monthly, quarterly, and annual close processes, ensuring accurate and timely financial statements
• Prepare and analyze income statements, balance sheets, and cash flow reports
• Ensure compliance with GAAP and relevant regulatory requirements
• Develop and implement accounting policies, procedures, and reporting frameworks for a new division

Buildout & Team Leadership

• Lead the setup of the accounting and finance function for a new or growing division
• Design organizational structure and recruit, hire, and develop the accounting team
• Establish scalable processes and workflows to support future growth in a growing company environment
• Foster a culture of accountability, ownership, and continuous improvement

Inventory & Cost Accounting

• Manage inventory accounting across multiple warehouses, channels, and SKUs
• Oversee standard costing, landed cost calculations, and margin analysis
• Monitor inventory reserves, obsolescence, and shrinkage
• Partner with operations and supply chain teams to ensure accurate inventory tracking

Wholesale & Revenue Recognition

• Oversee revenue recognition processes in line with wholesale agreements and terms
• Ensure proper accounting for discounts, chargebacks, returns, and allowances
• Analyze customer profitability and channel performance

Internal Controls & Compliance

• Establish and maintain strong internal controls to safeguard company assets
• Coordinate audits (internal and external) and manage auditor relationships
• Ensure compliance with tax regulations, including sales tax and multi-state filings

Cash Flow & Treasury

• Monitor cash flow, working capital, and liquidity needs
• Manage banking relationships and optimize cash management strategies

Systems & Process Improvement

• Evaluate, select, and implement ERP and financial systems as needed
• Drive automation and process improvements across accounting workflows

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in accounting, Finance, or related field (CPA preferred)
• 10-15+ years of progressive accounting experience, with at least 3 years in a leadership role
• Experience in apparel, fashion, wholesale, or consumer goods industry strongly preferred
• Proven experience building or scaling an accounting function or team, ideally within a growing company
• Strong understanding of inventory accounting and cost accounting methodologies
• Proficiency in ERP systems (e.g., NetSuite, SAP, or similar) and advanced Excel skills
• Excellent analytical, organizational, and communication skills
• Demonstrated ability to operate with flexibility, adaptability, and resilience in a fast-paced, evolving environment with some ambiguity
