Job summary

The University of Maine is seeking a Loan Processing Specialist to handle Alternative and PLUS Loan processing, eligibility determinations, disbursement, and data accuracy. The role serves as the primary contact for loan questions and partners with lenders for timely processing.

You will supervise student employees, support FAME programs, and ensure compliance with federal regulations. Strong communication and detail orientation are essential for success.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent (G.E.D.) AND two years administrative support experience.
  • Detail oriented.
  • Comfortable in a fast paced, highly computerized environment.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • High degree of experience with Microsoft Office Applications.
  • Data Entry Experience
  • Possess the attitude and ability to foster a respectful and productive workplace environment.

Responsibilities

  • Process alternative loans and Direct PLUS Loans including origination, transmittal, disbursement & adjustment of loan funds.
  • Determine academic year eligibility; decisions around eligibility require knowledge of federal regulations and policy.
  • Review prior loan history to determine aggregate amounts borrowed via NSLDS.
  • Responsible for loan disbursement processes that post funds to student accounts.
  • Resolve issues with certification or disbursement and suggest procedural changes to the supervisor.
  • Transmit and receive loan data through web-based loan delivery systems.
  • Work with lenders and disbursing agents to ensure timely processing; initiate corrections to loan records.
  • Process all paper checks from lenders for alternative loans.
  • Maintain documentation of loan policies and procedures with the Assistant Director for Loans.
  • Send email/letter loan communications to students and parents after processing.
