Job summary

SECU Credit Union is seeking a Financial Advisor to build and manage investment and planning relationships with members in Maryland. You will advise on long-term financial strategies, educate on risk and return, and work with cross-functional teams to expand member portfolios while adhering to SEC/FINRA regulations and BSA requirements.

Qualifications

  • 4 year College Degree in Economics, Finance, or equivalent experience.
  • 4+ years’ experience in Investment Sales.
  • Licensing: FINRA Series 7; Series 66/63/65; MD Life & Health Insurance designation; CFP or CRPC preferred.

What You Will Do

The Financial Advisor establishes value-added relationships with members to understand their investment and planning needs and to offer solutions using a total, individual needs-based approach. Serve as primary point of contact to provide advice to members for long-term financial planning, as well as educating and explaining the risks and benefits of investment and insurance products based upon the member’s specific objectives and tolerance for risk.

The Needs That a Financial Advisor Should Be Able To Meet Generally Are Growing And Protecting Assets And Include The Following

  • Determine and document the suitability of investment and insurance recommendations based upon a member’s tolerance to investment risk, in such a way so the customer sees the value, and understands the risks, features and benefits associated with the solution
  • Provide financial planning and investment advice from routine to highly complex
  • Legacy Planning
    • Protection of assets from unexpected / large scale healthcare expense
    • Protection of assets from estate taxes
  • Prospect outside of SECU in order to bring in new member relationships

The position entails outside community involvement, partnering with and referring business as applicable to various lines of business including branch banking, business bankers and commercial lenders, mortgage loan originators, and financial center leadership.

The Financial Advisor adheres to regulations and organizational policies, maintaining awareness and knowledge required to perform the duties of the position, including all aspects of the Bank Secrecy Act and related regulations, such as OFAC, and the USA Patriot Act, Fair Lending and Information Security.

A Day In Your Life Might Include
  • Provide investment recommendations and advice based on the needs and desires of the Member.
  • Establish value-added relationships with members to understand their investment and planning needs and to offer solutions using a total, individual needs based approach.
  • The Financial Advisor assists members identify financial goals and objectives by collecting and analyzing the member’s financial information, advise the member about the risks, advantages and disadvantages of various investment opportunities in light of the member’s individual financial circumstances, and recommend to the client only those investment solutions that are suitable for that member’s particular financial status, objectives, risk tolerance, tax exposure, and other investment needs.
  • Use discretion and independent judgment to determine and document the suitability of investment and insurance recommendations based upon the member’s tolerance to investment risk, in such a way so the member sees the value, and understands the risks, features and benefits associated with the solution
  • Establish strong, relationships through continuous periodic reviews as an essential part of members long-term goal achievement, as well as providing the same level of service and advice to existing credit union members.
  • Participate in local and community activities necessary to cultivate business outside of the credit union. The position will engage existing members, new members, and COI’s, actively work with our Bank-At-Work database, and respond to our members’ needs by assisting them in choosing the right products to meet their needs.
  • Follow the broker dealer established insurance and securities compliance guidelines, and strictly adhere to all broker dealer policies. Compliance with all applicable SEC/FINRA and applicable rules, as well as with BSA, OFAC and the PATRIOT Act and related rules and Regulations.
Additional Responsibilities May Include
  • Engage with the community to serve market segments to identify growth in SECU membership and investment opportunities. Includes establishing COI’s (Centers of Influence) plus attend CU on-site events.
What We Need From You
Education and Experience Requirements
  • 4 year College Degree in preferably Economics, Finance Business, or equivalent work experience in Financial/Investment Services.
  • Certifications: FINRA Series 7; FINRA Series 66 or Series 63 & 65; MD Life and Health Insurance designation; Certified Retirement Planning Counselor (CRPC) (preferred); Certified Financial Planner (CFP) (preferred)
  • 4+ years’ experience Investment Sales
  • Demonstrates an understanding of SECU’s culture, core values, mission and strategic priorities as it relates to one’s work and overall performance
  • Clearly communicates information, thoughts and ideas in a clear, concise and organized manner
  • Identifies opportunities to improve efficiency, reduce errors, or enhance member satisfaction
  • Prioritizes tasks effectively to support team goals and organizational timelines
  • Applies critical thinking to troubleshoot issues and escape concerns when appropriate
  • Understands the importance of confidentiality, compliance, and ethical behavior in daily responsibilities
  • Adapts to changes in processes, tools, or organizational priorities with a positive, solutions-focused approach
  • Maintains professionalism in communication, behavior, and representation of SECU
Physical Requirements
  • Must be able to remain in a stationary position, often standing or sitting for prolonged periods
  • Must be able to lift up to 25 pounds
Compensation Information

Offers will be based on experience and education. This role is a commission-based sales opportunity. During the initial years, compensation will include a combination of guaranteed pay and commission to support portfolio development. In later years, compensation will be fully commission-based.
