Job description

Thank you for stopping by and taking a look at the Director of Finance role I posted here on LinkedIN, I appreciate it.

Before we go further, just a few notes about me. I am a real, live, human posting this. So, not a 'bot' not an 'Ai engine'. In addition, I like to write JDs (Job Descriptions) to identify what we really need...as opposed to 100 things that say - essentially - nothing. So, let's make a deal here...I will be a real, honest to goodness, human in this process..lets have real live humans respond...as opposed to an Ai generated response. Sound good?

Most of the work I do is for profit. In other words, I get a fee from the employer to find talent...this is different. I am volunteering my time (so no fee from the client, no fee from the candidate) for a nonprofit that I am helping find a Finance Director.

This role is permanent and being done onsite at this clients Pilsen HQ (on 21st Place in Downtown Chicago). We are really only seeking candidates that are already located in the Chicago metro for this role. There are NO relocation dollars available for anyone to relocate to the Chicago area. Yep, this role is permanent and fully benefitted.

The Director of Finance provides senior strategic oversight and long-term financial foresight for all finance, accounting, and reporting activities, ensuring the fiscal integrity, organizational growth, and long-term sustainability. Managing a $6M annual budget funded by a diverse portfolio of government grants and private foundations, this leader serves as a visionary strategist and a vital bridge between financial data and mission-driven program operations. Reporting to the President and CEO to ensure exemplary annual audits, translates complex financial metrics into actionable strategy, and empowers program leaders through financial education and highly organized, transparent reporting.

The ability to manage the Finance department with agility and flexibility will be needed for success in this role. This is not a highly dramatic place or one that is full of giant egos. So, that ability to and willingness to share your ideas on how to manage growth, how to monitor debts and balance budgets are things we would really like to see in the individual chosen for this role.

As anyone in the Nonprofit space knows, dedication to the mission and it’s programs are also a key to success. A personal connection or genuine interest in helping Latina and Immigrant Women, working with eliminating domestic and sexual violence, and working with health educators are things that we would really like to see in the next candidate for this role. You will have a staff of 2-3 to manage as well.

As one might expect, the main responsibilities for a role like this encompass strategic foresight & financial planning, long-range modeling, budgeting & variance, asset & capital management, program partnership, systems & process optimization, internal controls, audit coordination grant accounting, board & executive reporting, staff management & development and cross-departmental collaboration. These are all 'table stakes'. However, on top of this, we need someone that has a true corazon (heart) for helping those women who have been affected by abuse.

Here is what we are seeking:

  • I am going to be far more interested in breadth and depth of experience as opposed to years of experience. We all know individuals that have 8 years of experience that is incredibly wide and deep with more breadth than individuals with 15 years of experience.
  • While nonprofit experience is a definite plus, if you are coming from the for profit sector, but have a passion or a personal connection to the kinds of programs Mujeres Latinas are working on, that would be fine as well.
  • Strategic Vision: Exceptional analytical skill and strategic foresight; a proven ability to interpret complex data to anticipate organizational needs and drive institutional decision-making. Stated more simply, that ability to see the big picture of how finance runs through all the aspects of the organization will be needed for success in this role. This also includes collaborating with other aspects of the organization to collaborate on budgets.
  • Organization & Execution: Superior organizational and project management skills, with a demonstrated ability to manage competing priorities, streamline complex workflows, and oversee software implementations. This organization runs payroll through PayCom, and also works with FundEZ.
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills.Must possess the ability to articulate financial complexities clearly and persuasively to board members, staff, and external funders.
  • Advanced knowledge of accounting software (Fund-EZ preferred) and Microsoft Office applications.
  • A personal commitment to the mission to empower of the Latina community.
