The proposed CO₂ pipeline corridor from Calcasieu Parish to Plaquemine (Iberville Parish) is part of Louisiana's expanding carbon capture and sequestration (CCS) infrastructure network. The purpose of the pipeline is to transport captured carbon dioxide from industrial facilities and collection points to permanent underground storage reservoirs located primarily in the Baton Rouge and River Parishes industrial corridor.
The route would traverse portions of the Florida Parishes region before entering the Capital Region, connecting rural and industrial areas through a high-pressure CO₂ transportation system. Calcasieu Parish provides strategic routing opportunities due to its available land and proximity to regional transportation corridors, while the Plaquemine area serves as a major destination because of its extensive petrochemical, refining, and carbon storage development activity.
The Plaquemine and greater Baton Rouge industrial corridor has emerged as one of Louisiana's primary carbon management hubs. Multiple sequestration projects are being developed to receive and permanently store millions of metric tons of CO₂ annually within deep geological formations through EPA-regulated Class VI injection wells. These projects are designed to support decarbonization efforts by refineries, chemical plants, ammonia facilities, hydrogen production sites, and other industrial emitters throughout the state.
Key benefits of the project include support for industrial sustainability goals, reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, preservation of manufacturing competitiveness, and creation of long-term infrastructure investment opportunities throughout South Louisiana. The pipeline would provide a critical transportation link between emission sources and secure underground storage facilities.
Major considerations affecting project development include land acquisition, right-of-way access, environmental permitting, public engagement, emergency response planning, and pipeline safety requirements. Community stakeholders across several Louisiana parishes have expressed interest in ensuring that routing, construction, and operational activities are conducted safely and transparently.
Overall Assessment: The Calcasieu Parish-to-Plaquemine Parish CO₂ pipeline corridor represents a significant component of Louisiana's rapidly expanding carbon capture and storage industry, linking potential collection areas in southeastern Louisiana with permanent storage and industrial utilization hubs in the Baton Rouge and Plaquemine region.
Geographic area of responsibility includes Calcasieu Parish to Plaquemine Parish to Lake Charles Parish Louisiana. This position typically works an 8-hour shift. Monday-Friday. Expected to work overtime, holidays, and weekends as necessary. Expected to respond to emergency callouts 24/7. Position requires travel.
