Job summary

Race Communications in Tehachapi, CA is seeking a Field Technician Lead to oversee and coordinate field operations, ensuring deployment, maintenance, and repair of our telecom infrastructure. You will lead a team of field technicians, ensuring safe, efficient work and high-quality standards at our designated worksite with occasional travel.

The role requires 5+ years in telecom field operations, 2+ years in leadership, and the ability to work Tue–Sat 10:00am–7:00pm.

Qualifications

  • Eligibility for US Employment without sponsorship.
  • Minimum of 21 years of age.
  • High School Diploma or GED or equivalent combination of education and experience is preferred.
  • A valid California driver's license, subject to DMV verification, is mandatory.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in telecommunications field operations, with at least 2 years in a leadership or supervisory role.
  • Ability to work offset shifts, Tuesdays through Saturdays from 10:00a to 7:00p.
  • Ability to work nights, weekends, holidays, and overtime to support 24/7 operations.
  • Proficiency in Spanish is a plus.
  • Proficiency in English for workplace communication.

Responsibilities

  • Serves as the primary point of contact for the field technician team and leads tasks.
  • Provides technical troubleshooting support for telecom issues.
  • Plans, organizes, and prioritizes field operations to meet deadlines and SLAs.
  • Coordinates with departments to ensure smooth service delivery.
  • Oversees installation and commissioning of telecom equipment, ensuring safety and quality.
  • Supervises maintenance and repair of telecom equipment and network infrastructure.
  • Conducts quality checks to maintain service excellence.
  • Trains and mentors field technicians for skill development.
  • Enforces health and safety policies and conducts safety training.
  • Maintains records of field activities and service reports for management.
  • Manages equipment inventory and ensures tools are available.
  • Operates vehicle/equipment and travels to various sites as needed.
  • Supports on-call duties for emergencies and outages.

Location: In Field: Tehachapi, CA. Location Status: Work schedule is Tuesday through Saturday from 10:00a to 7:00p. Work will be primarily performed at a designated field worksite location based out of a central Race Communications worksite. Occasional travel to and work from other Race offices or other off-site locations will be required.

Position Impact:

As the Field Technician Lead, you will play a critical role in overseeing and coordinating field operations, ensuring the successful deployment, maintenance, and repair of our telecommunications infrastructure. Your strong technical expertise, leadership skills, and commitment to excellence will drive the success of our field operations and contribute to the seamless delivery of telecom services to our customers.

The Field Technician Lead will be responsible for leading a team of field technicians in the installation, maintenance, and repair of telecommunications equipment, and ensuring that all work is completed safely, efficiently, and to the highest quality standards.

Requirements
Qualifications and Experience:
  • Eligibility for US Employment without sponsorship
  • Minimum of 21 years of age

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in telecommunications field operations, with at least 2 years in a leadership or supervisory role
  • Proven technical knowledge of telecommunications equipment and services
  • Ability to work offset shifts, which include Tuesdays through Saturdays from 10:00a to 7:00p
  • Ability to work nights, weekends, holidays, and overtime as needed to support emergency response, outage restoration, and urgent maintenance for 24/7 operations
  • Proficiency in Spanish Language a plus
  • The ability to effectively communicate in English, including speaking, reading, writing, and comprehension, as necessary for effective job performance and workplace communication
  • Proficiency in Spanish Language is desirable
Skills:
  • Proficient use of MS Office applications including Teams, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint; teleconferencing applications
  • Functional use of common office equipment, computers, and office software
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Technical Leadership:
  • Serves as the primary point of contact for the field technician team. Lead and guide a team of field technicians to ensure efficient execution of tasks and projects
  • Provides technical expertise and troubleshooting support for complex telecom issues
Field Operations Management:
  • Plans, organizes, and prioritizes field operations to meet project deadlines and service level agreements
  • Coordinates with other departments and stakeholders to ensure the smooth implementation of telecom services
Deployment and Installation:
  • Oversees the installation and commissioning of telecom equipment, ensuring adherence to industry standards, safety protocols, and quality guidelines
Maintenance and Repairs:
  • Supervises and participates in the troubleshooting, maintenance, and repair of telecom equipment and network infrastructure
  • Identifies and resolves technical issues promptly to minimize service disruptions
Quality Assurance:
  • Ensures the work performed by the field technician team meets company standards and customer expectations
  • Conducts quality checks and audits to maintain service excellence
Training and Development:
  • Trains and mentors field technicians, facilitating their skill development and growth
  • Stays updated with the latest telecom technologies and industry trends to enhance the team's capabilities
Health and Safety:
  • Upholds and enforces safety policies and procedures, promoting a culture of safety awareness among the field technician team
Reporting and Documentation:
  • Maintains accurate records of field activities, equipment inventory, and service reports
  • Provides regular reports to management on the status of field operations, challenges faced, and recommendations for improvement
Customer Relations:
  • Interacts with customers in a professional and courteous manner, addressing their concerns and providing technical assistance when necessary
Equipment and Inventory Management:
  • Manages equipment inventory, ensuring availability and proper maintenance of tools, test equipment, and materials required for field operations
Equipment Operations and Site Maintenance:
  • Operates mechanized equipment such as a bucket truck, excavators, and trencher
  • Climbs poles up to 40 feet and operates in bucket trucks with 32' plus ladders-Aerial ONLY
  • Manages deployment and removal of traffic control devices to ensure safety in work areas on streets or roadways
  • Adheres to and operates within the weight capacity limits specified by manufacturers for equipment and machinery:
  • Bucket Truck: 350-pound manufacturers maximum load capacity
  • Ladders: 300-pound manufacturers maximum load capacity
Vehicle Maintenance and Travel:
  • Maintains vehicle/equipment pre-op/post-op to be prepared to perform required duties
  • Maintains a clean driving record as defined by the current fleet insurance underwriter
  • Spends a significant portion of the workday traveling in a vehicle visiting various locations and spending time both indoors and outdoors including businesses and/or residents depending on the nature of the job
  • May be required to work overtime, after hours, on weekends, for emergencies, or be on-call as needed to ensure work is completed
Safety Protocols:
  • Adheres to safety protocols and guidelines outlined in the Race employee handbook and job description to promote a safe work environment
Additional Duties As Required.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
  • Adheres to team procedures and guidelines, as well as policies outlined in the Race Communications Employee Handbook
  • Provides support in identifying training needs and supports professional development initiatives to enhance team skills and performance. Helps onboard and mentor new team members to ensure they are equipped with the knowledge and skills needed to perform their roles safely and effectively
  • Provides support to team members on various team matters, ensuring alignment with organizational policies and applicable laws
  • Collaborates with team members to maintain a positive work environment by fostering open communication, addressing minor conflicts, and escalating issues as needed
  • Helps ensure team members have the tools and resources needed to succeed, assisting in tracking progress toward goals and providing status updates as requested
  • Assists in maintaining compliance with company policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements, ensuring team alignment with organizational standards
  • This role does not have direct supervisory responsibilities. The Lead may assist in tasks related to supervision on behalf of the reporting supervisor or manager on duty, such as coordinating task assignments, timing of shift breaks, validating mid-level transactions, and escalating disciplinary and performance matters
