Job summary

Lumen is hiring a Field Technician I to support enterprise customers in the Grand Island, NE area. You’ll install, maintain, troubleshoot, and restore network services in the field while learning through structured training and on‑the‑job experience.

This entry‑level role expects readiness to service the greater Grand Island market. Ideal candidates have a High School Diploma or GED, basic networking knowledge, and a valid driver’s license.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED required; 1+ years network monitoring, installation, or maintenance/repair desired.
  • Basic networking knowledge and interest in telecommunications technology.
  • Valid driver's license to operate company vehicle.
  • Ability to perform physical tasks (climbing, lifting up to 50 lbs).
  • Must be reliable with strong learning aptitude and willingness to participate in on-call rotation.

Responsibilities

  • Troubleshoot network equipment and replace defective parts to restore service.
  • Assist in installation, change, decommission, and testing of Next Gen technologies (Edge Compute, Wavelength, Fiber, Ethernet, IP).
  • Install, activate, test, and maintain network services and telecom equipment.
  • Perform basic troubleshooting and repair for customer and network service issues.
  • Conduct fiber and Ethernet testing and circuit validation as assigned.
  • Travel to customer and network locations for field work and on-call rotations.

The Role

As a Field Technician I, you will support enterprise customers by installing, maintaining, troubleshooting, and restoring network services in the field. This entry‑level role is designed for individuals who are eager to learn, enjoy hands‑on technical work, and are interested in building a long‑term career in telecommunications. Through a combination of structured training, instructor‑led learning, and on‑the‑job experience, you will develop the skills needed to independently support customer and network operations. Must be willing to service the greater Grand Island, NE market.

The Main Responsibilities
  • Troubleshoots network equipment, removes/replaces defective equipment, and works with appropriate resources to isolate and ultimately restore network. Proactively identify potential problem areas to ensure integrity of the network and company.
  • Assists in the installation/change/decommission and testing of Next Generation technologies such as Edge Compute, Wavelength, Fiber Optic transport, Ethernet, SONET and IP network layers for all available bandwidths offered. May install and test network and customer premise equipment (CPE) including installation and delivery of end user services.
  • Install, activate, test, and maintain network services and telecommunications equipment.
  • Perform basic troubleshooting and repair activities for customer and network service issues.
  • Conduct fiber testing, Ethernet testing, and circuit validation activities as assigned.
  • Travel to customer and network locations to complete field service work.
  • Support outage response and service restoration efforts, including participation in an on‑call rotation.
  • Deliver a positive customer experience through professional communication and technical support.
  • Follow safety procedures while working in a physically demanding field environment.
  • Collaborate with team members and participate in ongoing training and development programs.
What We Look For in a Candidate
Required:
  • High School Diploma or GED or up to 2 years of relevant job experience including 1+ years network monitoring, installation, or maintenance/repair.
  • Basic networking knowledge and an interest in telecommunications technology.
  • Valid driver's license with the ability to operate a company vehicle.
  • Ability to work in a field environment, including climbing, crouching, lifting, and other physical job requirements.
  • Strong learning aptitude, work ethic, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work overtime and participate in an on‑call rotation.
  • Strong communication skills and a customer-focused mindset.
  • Demonstrated reliability and commitment to long‑term career growth.
  • Sit, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, and crawl; lift 50 lbs.; works in all weather conditions
Preferred Qualifications:
  • 0 to 2 years of experience in a technical, telecommunications, or field service role.
  • Experience with telecommunications installations, troubleshooting, or maintenance activities.
  • Fiber optic installation or testing experience.Ethernet or circuit testing experience.
  • Experience as a Telecom Technician, Fiber Network Technician, or Transmission Technician.
  • Rack‑and‑stack experience within network or telecommunications environments.
  • Technical school, trade school, or community college training in a related field.
  • Hands‑on experience working with network infrastructure or telecommunications equipment.
Compensation

This information reflects the anticipated base salary range for this position based on current national data. Minimums and maximums may vary based on location. Individual pay is based on skills, experience and other relevant factors.

Location Based Pay Ranges

$41,310 - $54,570 in these states: NE
