Job summary

Lumen is seeking a Field Technician I to install, test, maintain, and repair telecommunications equipment and fiber infrastructure across Bloomington, IL and surrounding areas.

You will work independently, troubleshoot issues, support installations, and ensure service reliability with on-call rotations, safety practices, and a valid driver's license.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • 1+ years experience in network monitoring, installation or maintenance/repair.
  • Knowledge of Transmission (DS1/DS3/SONET), Switching, TCP/IP and Outside Plant.
  • Knowledge of locating fiber optic cable, right-of-way, and As-Builts.
  • Maintain site security and cleanliness; PC skills and MS Windows/Office familiarity.
  • Ability to learn corporate databases quickly; on-call 24x7 as required.
  • Valid driver’s license; ability to lift 50 lbs and work in all weather.
  • On-site travel and field work across assigned territories.

The Role

As a Field Technician I, you will play a hands‑on role in supporting and maintaining Lumen’s fiber network and customer infrastructure. This position is ideal for individuals who enjoy working independently, solving technical problems, and delivering exceptional customer experiences. You will perform installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair activities across network facilities and customer locations while ensuring service reliability and operational excellence. This role will be servicing the Bloomington, Il greater area.

The Main Responsibilities
  • Install, test, maintain, and repair telecommunications equipment and fiber infrastructure
  • Troubleshoot service-impacting issues and perform corrective actions to restore customer services
  • Support customer installations, service turn‑ups, maintenance activities, and repair work
  • Maintain and support ILA sites and network infrastructure throughout assigned service territories
  • Respond to service‑affecting incidents and urgent customer requirements in a timely manner
  • Complete work orders, documentation, and system updates accurately and efficiently
  • Safely operate company vehicles, tools, and field equipment while following established safety guidelines
  • Participate in scheduled on‑call rotations and travel throughout assigned territories to support network operations and customer needs
What We Look For in a Candidate
Required:
  • High School Diploma or GED or up to 2 years of relevant job experience including 1+ years network monitoring, installation, or maintenance/repair.
  • Entry‑level technician with experience and/or knowledge of at least one of the four major technician disciplines: Transmission (DS1/DS3/SONET), Switching (circuit‑switching/SS7), TCP/IP (routers/higher‑layer protocols), and Outside Plant (Fiber locating, OTDR, Mass Fusion Splicing, etc.).
  • Have knowledge of locating fiber optic cable, right‑of‑way, and As‑Builts.
  • Must maintain site security and cleanliness.
  • Must have PC skills and be well versed in Microsoft Windows and Office applications.
  • Must possess the ability to quickly learn corporate databases.
  • On‑call 24x7 on a rotational basis, on stand‑by, call out, dispatch, and overtime are required as dictated by the business.
  • A valid driver’s license
  • Sit, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, and crawl; lift 50 lbs.; works in all weather conditions
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience in telecommunications or fiber optic environments
  • Experience with network installation, maintenance, or troubleshooting
  • Field service, cable, or broadband installation experience
  • Construction trade experience
  • Electrical or low‑voltage systems experience
  • Technical repair or maintenance experience
  • Demonstrated problem‑solving and troubleshooting skills
  • Ability to quickly learn new technologies and processes
Compensation

This information reflects the anticipated base salary range for this position based on current national data. Minimums and maximums may vary based on location. Individual pay is based on skills, experience and other relevant factors.

Location Based Pay Ranges

$45,021 - $60,027 in these states: IL
