Job description

Job Summary The Field Technician 1 will be responsible for supporting field operations related to the identification, investigation, and documentation of underground utilities. This entry-level position offers a hands‑on opportunity to gain valuable experience in utility locating, mapping, and data collection. The ideal candidate will have a strong work ethic, a willingness to learn, and the ability to work efficiently in the field.

Duties / Responsibilities
  • Conduct field surveys and utility locating using state‑of‑the‑art equipment (e.g., electromagnetic locators, ground‑penetrating radar).
  • Assist with the excavation of test pits and perform utility exposure when necessary.
  • Collect, document, and accurately record utility data, ensuring all information is properly logged for reporting purposes.
  • Support project teams in utility mapping and verification efforts, adhering to safety and quality standards.
  • Provide clear and concise reports on utility locations, potential conflicts, and relevant findings.
  • Assist in maintaining and organizing field equipment, tools, and supplies.
  • Follow company and industry safety protocols while working in a variety of environments, including construction sites, roadways, and other field settings.
  • Travel position within the state of PA and surrounding areas.
Required Competencies, Skills, And Abilities
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and to delegate them when appropriate.
  • Familiarity with software and technology specific to the industry.
  • Proficient organizational and time management skills with proven ability to meet deadlines.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office 365 Suite or related software.
  • Familiarity with computer‑aided drafting (CAD) software and/or others of the like.
  • Excellent communication skills and a positive attitude.
  • Possess a valid driver’s license.
  • Ability to pass criminal background and drug screens.
  • Ability to travel as needed, which accounts for roughly 50% of the position, but may vary from time to time.
  • Ability to work in a fast‑paced, small business environment.
  • Willingness to obtain a Department of Transportation (DOT) Medical Examiners Certificate to operate Company equipment up to 26,000 pounds is preferred.
Field Technician I Education And Experience
  • High school diploma or equivalent required; technical or vocational training in utility locating or a related field is a plus.
  • Basic understanding of subsurface utilities (water, sewer, gas, electric) and infrastructure is desirable.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to sustain prolonged periods of work standing, walking, bending, stooping, sitting, and other potential movements in varying weather conditions and terrains.
  • Ability to remain seated or standing for prolonged periods of time.
  • Comfortable working outdoors in various weather conditions and physical environments.
  • Ability to lift or carry 50+ pounds as needed.
  • Ability to push and pull heavy equipment that may exceed 30+ pounds, as needed.
