NextEdge is seeking a Field Technician I in Columbia, SC to support construction, installation, repair, and maintenance of infrastructure projects across civil, telecom, and utility installations. You will operate and assist with heavy equipment, load trucks, conduct safety checks, and maintain documentation.

Travel up to 50% is required; must have a high school diploma and a valid driver's license with DOT readiness.

Qualifications

  • OSHA 10 certification (or willingness to obtain).

Responsibilities

  • Operates or assists with construction, excavation, and hauling equipment including backhoes and dump trucks.
  • Utilizes equipment and tools to support demolition, excavation, installation, and general construction activities.
  • Assists with excavation work such as digging pads, trenching, and conduit installation.
  • Performs routine field activities such as pulling rope, climbing ladders, using hand tools, and site cleanup.
  • Loads, stocks, and organizes trucks with materials and equipment for daily work.
  • Completes daily equipment safety inspections and basic maintenance checks.
  • Completes required documentation (timesheets, truck reports, expense reports).
  • Performs work safely and complies with company safety policies and procedures.
  • Supports team members in meeting project goals and timelines across field environments.
  • Safely operates company vehicles and trailers to transport personnel and materials.

Field Technician I

Direct Columbia, SC, US

Job Summary/Objective:

Possesses a general understanding of equipment, tools, and safety procedures used in construction, installation, repair, and maintenance of infrastructure and related systems. Supports field operations through hands-on work across a variety of projects, including civil, telecom, and utility installations. This position requires regular operation of company vehicles, transportation of materials and equipment to job sites, and operation of forklifts and other material‑handling equipment in support of field activities.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Operates or assists with construction, excavation, and hauling equipment including backhoes, skid steers, mini‑excavators, gradalls, asphalt rollers, and dump trucks (training provided as needed).
  • Utilizes equipment and tools to support demolition, excavation, installation, and general construction activities across job sites.
  • Assists with excavation work such as digging pads, preparing sub-grades, trenching, and supporting installation of conduit, cabling, and underground utilities.
  • Performs routine field activities such as pulling rope, climbing ladders, using common hand tools, manual digging, cable handling, and general site cleanup.
  • Loads, stocks, and organizes trucks with materials and equipment to ensure readiness for daily work assignments.
  • Completes daily equipment safety inspections and basic maintenance checks.
  • Accurately completes all required company documentation for each assignment in accordance with established standards (e.g., timesheets, truck reports, expense reports).
  • Performs work in a safe manner and complies with all company safety policies and procedures.
  • Supports team members in meeting project goals and timelines across various field environments.
  • Safely operates company vehicles and trailers to transport personnel, materials, and equipment to and from job sites.
  • Operates forklifts and other material‑handling equipment in accordance with company safety procedures and training requirements.
  • Maintains eligibility to operate company vehicles by meeting and maintaining company driving standards and DOT requirements.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Education and Experience:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid Drivers License and ability to meet and maintain DOT requirements.

Preferred and Additional Eligibility Qualifications:

  • OSHA 10 certification (or willingness to obtain).
  • Previous construction, telecom, utility, or outdoor field experience is a plus.

Skills Required:

  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
  • Basic ability to read and follow construction drawings, plans, and specifications.
  • Willingness to learn equipment operation and safe work practices around existing infrastructure.
  • Comfortable working in active job sites, including areas with pedestrian and vehicular traffic.
  • Strong work ethic, reliability, and commitment to safety.

Direct/Indirect Supervisory Responsibility:

Work Environment/Physical Demands/Travel Required:

  • Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions, except in unsafe or extreme conditions.
  • Role requires frequent physical activity, including lifting, digging, climbing, and standing for extended periods.
  • Travel is required up to 50% of the time depending on project needs.
