Job summary

Tri-County Electric Cooperative (TCEC) seeks a Field Services Technician to support design, construction, inspection, and maintenance of distribution facilities. You will perform field engineering, staking, data collection, and documentation to ensure reliable electric service.

Responsibilities include project coordination with members and contractors, right‑of‑way activities, and compliance with safety standards.

Qualifications

  • Must interpret maps, drawings, and technical specifications and perform calculations.
  • Must be able to use computers and mobile devices to complete work and documentation.
  • Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions, operate vehicles and equipment, and lift up to 50 pounds.

  • Collects field data using GPS and prepares staking sheets, construction packages, drawings, and cost information.
  • Performs right‑of‑way investigations, easement research, permitting, and coordination with stakeholders.
  • Performs system inspections and documents asset inventory and conditions; coordinates corrections with GIS as needed.
  • Supports emergency response activities and ongoing safety and compliance with policies and OSHA standards.

Tri-County Electric Cooperative (TCEC)

POSITION PURPOSE:

The Field Services Technician evaluates member service requirements, property conditions, geographic features, and existing Cooperative facilities to support the design, construction, inspection, maintenance, and documentation of overhead and underground electric distribution facilities. The position performs field engineering, staking, project coordination, system inspections, and related field services in support of safe and reliable electric service.

JOB DIMENSIONS:

Internal Responsibility – Collaborates across the Cooperative to support electric distribution projects from initial request through design and construction. Coordinates project requirements, field information, documentation, and needs with the appropriate departments, including coordination when communication with governmental entities is required.
External Responsibility – Serves as a field representative of the Cooperative when working with members, developers, builders, contractors, and other stakeholders. Evaluates service needs, gathers field information, explains Cooperative requirements, and coordinates project needs while providing professional service and maintaining positive working relationships.

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:
  • Regularly models multiple TCEC Essential Attributes as a regular pattern of behavior and self-awareness.
  • Offers feedback and is receptive and responsive to supervisory feedback to support professional development, effective performance, and expected workplace behaviors.
  • Performs assigned work safely and in compliance with Cooperative policies, OSHA regulations, national electrical safety standards, and other applicable laws, regulations, and industry standards applicable to assigned duties.
  • Evaluates member service requirements and existing distribution facilities and performs field engineering necessary to develop proposed line extensions, upgrades, and other distribution projects.
  • Designs and stakes overhead and underground distribution projects, including residential, commercial, subdivision, system improvement, load growth, and other assigned work based on training, demonstrated competency, and progression level.
  • Collects field data using GPS and other technology; prepares staking sheets, construction packages, drawings, cost information, photographs, and other required project documentation.
  • Conducts right-of-way field investigations, easement research, permitting activities, and related project coordination with members, developers, and other stakeholders.
  • Performs system inspections, including documentation of pole-line conditions, asset inventory, joint-use contacts, right-of-way conditions, and other distribution facilities; identifies mapping or infrastructure inconsistencies and coordinates corrections with GIS and other departments.
  • Coordinates project requirements and site logistics and communicates Cooperative design and construction requirements professionally to members, developers, contractors, and other stakeholders.
  • Applies technical knowledge to resolve distribution system and project issues, identify process improvements, and support emergency response activities as assigned.
  • Successfully completes and maintains required technical training, certifications, and job-related education necessary to perform assigned responsibilities and progress within the Field Services Technician career path.
  • Available to work after normal business hours during emergency response situations as required.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
  • Education – A high school diploma or equivalent is required. Technical training in electrical utility systems, electrical distribution design, drafting, surveying, engineering technology, or a related field is preferred.
  • Experience – Previous experience in electric utility distribution design, staking, construction, engineering, surveying, utility line work is preferred but not required. Applicants will be placed into the appropriate Field Services Technician level based on relevant experienced, demonstrated competencies, certifications, and successful completion of the Cooperative's Field Services Technician career progression requirements.
  • Knowledge/Skills/Abilities – Ability to interpret system maps, engineering drawings, staking sheets, specifications, and technical information and perform required mathematical calculations. Must be able to interpret technical information, use computers and mobile technology to complete work and documentation, and provide professional service to members. Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions, operate Cooperative vehicles and equipment, climb, kneel, bend, lift and carry up to 50 pounds, and safely perform frequent physically demanding work. A valid driver's license is required.
