Job summary

City of Wilmington seeks a Field Service Technician to maintain stormwater systems, keep roads safe, and support public spaces. You’ll work with a team, perform manual tasks outdoors, and assist with debris removal as part of daily duties.

Typical duties include operating small equipment, reading instructions, and ensuring safety standards are followed. Candidate must have a Class C license and obtain a Flagger & WorkZone Safety certification within 90 days.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

  • Assist with repairs, maintenance, and improvements to drainage systems using small equipment and hand tools.
  • Help construct and maintain streets by using small equipment and applying materials.
  • Perform manual labor such as digging trenches and moving materials.
  • Follow safety procedures and manage traffic around worksites to protect crew and the public.
  • Provide storm readiness support and set up street barricades for events.

The city is looking for a Field Service Technician to help keep stormwater systems flowing, roads safe, and public spaces reliable—while working hands on with a team that takes pride in serving the community.

While on the job, you will be assisting with work activities, removing debris, and other related work as required. Equipment/tools primarily utilized includes, but is not limited to, the following: hand tools such as rakes, shovels, picks, hammers, hand saws, lopping shears, and trash pickers; CCTV Helpers and Vac-Con Helpers. Other duties include assisting crew members, maintaining small hand tools and equipment, and completing daily forms and logs. Work is performed under regular supervision.

The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned.

  • Assists with repairs, maintenance, and improvements to the drainage system by operating small equipment and power tools, repairing pipes, catch basins, manholes, open channels, creeks, ditches, and ponds.
  • Constructs and maintains streets by cleaning, operating small equipment and power tools, applying sealing materials, rebuilding shoulders, applying surfaces, reconditioning base and sub-grade materials, replacing deteriorated curbs and gutters, replacing surface and base materials, and repairing surfaces otherwise damaged.
  • Performs manual labor in support of construction, maintenance, and repair projects; digs ditches, trenches, and holes manually or utilizing power equipment; shovels, rakes, spreads, compacts, and levels dirt, rock, asphalt, cement, and other materials; retrieves supplies, materials, tools, equipment and other items and runs various errands as needed; collects, transports, and loads and unloads materials, supplies, tools, and equipment to and from the worksite.
  • Follows established safety procedures; utilizes safety equipment and wearing protective gear; monitors traffic conditions surrounding trucks and equipment to identify obstructions, pedestrians, or unsafe traffic conditions; flags and directs traffic and places markers, signs and cones around project and work site to ensure safety of crew and the traveling public; and reports incidents, accidents, problems, or unusual situations.
  • Provides operational support by assisting with storm preparation and clean up, building and setting up street barricades for special events, and performing other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Work requires the ability to read and understand written instructions, to understand simple processes and the routine operation of machines. Level of knowledge is equivalent to less than high school or equivalency.
  • No prior experience required.
  • Class C driver’s license.
  • Ability to obtain Flagger & WorkZone Safety certification required within 90 days of hire.
  • Ability to perform a variety of manual tasks for extended periods of time and in all types of weather conditions.
  • Ability to communicate and work cooperatively with colleagues, City leadership, and the general public.
  • Ability to apply principles of logical thinking to work tasks and handle practical situations and requests made by supervisor and/or lead workers; to comprehend and respond to a variety of situations in an efficient manner; to understand and follow simple oral and written directives and perform the relative tasks using sound judgment
Physical Demands

Exerting 50-75 lbs. occasionally, 10-25 lbs. frequently, or up to 10-20 lbs. constantly.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
  • This position will require outdoor work in all types of weather conditions.
  • Emergency work in storm events is required
  • All positions will be required to participate in On-Call program on a rotating basis with other employees/ operating sections.
