Job summary

Airgas is seeking a Field Service Technician to install and maintain cryogenic and high‑pressure gas systems at customer sites in California. The role requires troubleshooting, brazing certification, and strict adherence to safety policies. Overnight travel may be required.

Qualifications

• 1–3 years diagnostic/repair in cryogenics, high-pressure piping, brazing, controls, or instrumentation.

• HVAC or plumbing exposure with welding/brazing is a plus.
• Valid driver’s license with clean DMV; may require DOT physical.
• Ability to read manuals and P&ID drawings and follow CGA/NFPA/NEC standards.

The hourly base pay range for this position in California is $38.00 - $40.00.

Work Schedule: Monday - Friday 7:00 am to 4:00 pm.

Responsibilities

• Cryogenic Technician will assist in the installation, preventative maintenance and repair of high pressure cylinder piping systems, cryogenic bulk tanks, micro-bulk tanks, cryogenic dewar cylinders, vaporizers and manifold equipment at Airgas facilities and customer sites to ensure the safe, effective and efficient delivery of our products to the customers’ point of use.
• Install and troubleshoot Telemetry.
• Obtain brazing certification.
• Comply with all Company and industry safety policies and procedures.
• Obtain federal, state, and municipal/local required certifications in order to perform job tasks.
• Commission, install, and maintain cryogenic and high pressure gas piping systems, bulk vessels, micro-bulk tanks, cryogenic dewar cylinders, vaporizers, and manifold equipment at customer and Airgas sites to ensure the safe, effective and efficient delivery of our products to the customers’ point of use.
• Perform sight surveys at prospective customer locations to determine scope of job.
• Perform cryogenic and high pressure piping systems inspections and repairs of such equipment as per NFPA standards and manufacturers recommended procedures to ensure operational safety and efficiency.
• Service, inspect, use, and maintain compressors, pumps and other shop tools/equipment in good working condition and accordance with manufacturers recommended procedures.
• Identify and communicate service problems to manager for timely repair response.
• Maintain inventory of parts and tools required to perform service, inspection, and maintenance of all equipment associated with the basic function of this position.
• Handle hazardous materials in a safe and approved manner.
• Install piping and final line regulator systems for specialized applications.
• Install and set alarms for automatic emergency reserve and back up system of gases.
• Install manifolds and valves for use with high pressure gas cylinders.
• Secures the necessary documentation and approvals of work performed (installations and/or removals)
• Submit completed service orders, estimates and invoices to manager in timely manner to facilitate customer billing.
• Demonstrate proficient skills; upgrades knowledge and skills on an on-going basis.
• Maintain excellent customer service.
• Flexible work schedule with ability to travel overnight.
• Must attend company safety meetings.
• Ensure proper and full time use of PPE.
• General office/facility housekeeping.
• Occasional mandatory overtime may be required, and On-Call on weekends and holidays.
• All employees are expected to perform any reasonable work request that falls within the qualifications but not specifically described.

Required Qualifications

• Desired minimum of 1-3 years of diagnostic and/or repair experience in some or all of the following is required: cryogenics, high pressure piping, brazing, programmable controls, and process instrumentation.
• Prior experience working with bulk gas delivery systems, pumps, or mechanical machinery.
• Experience in the HVAC or plumbing industry with hands on welding/brazing skills a plus.
• Must have a valid driver’s license and clean DMV report, may require DOT physical.
• Able to understand piping and tank detail from manuals and mechanical drawings and/or P&ID’s.
• Ability to understand and apply applicable standards for good manufacturing practice set forth by the CGA, NFPA, NEC and other professional/regulatory bodies.
• Ability to use hand tools (electrical and manual) in a safe manner.
• Must have strong math skills; ability to calculate figures and units of measure.
• Skills to prioritize integrated service activities to maximize time spent working on equipment at customer locations.
• Must be customer service oriented and able to interact with both internal and external customers in a professional manner.
• Must be able to work flexible hours to meet customers’ needs and managements’ expectations with overtime as needed.
• Must be willing to be away from home for up to 3-5 days at a time for installs and certification schools.
• Takes initiative to problem solve and troubleshoot with results.
• Must be able to operate a forklift and scissor lift, and be able to maintain appropriate certifications.
• Ability to routinely lift 25-50 lbs and occasionally lift 51-80 lbs with material handling equipment.
• Ability to work safely under pressure to meet deadlines.
• Team player attitude with ability to work with a wide variety of people with different personalities and backgrounds.
• Must be able to wear required personal protective equipment.
