Job summary

Matthews International is seeking a Field Service Technician to deliver on-site installation, training, repair, and preventive maintenance of our equipment for customers, distributors, and sales teams in Massachusetts.

You will travel as needed to install systems, troubleshoot issues, and support sales through maintenance agreements and parts. The role requires an associate degree or technical certification and 4+ years of experience.

Qualifications

• Associate degree or technical certification or apprenticeship in a technical field is required.
• 4+ years of experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Willingness to travel regionally or internationally as needed.
• Proficient with MS Office; good communication and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to read electrical drawings and comprehend schematics.

Responsibilities

• Assist with system installation including custom applications.
• Repair equipment at customer site.
• Provide technical assistance via phone/email and coordinate with product services, engineering, and sales.
• Test and verify electrical motors, sensors, control circuits, and power circuits.
• Verify mechanical and pneumatic components are properly installed.
• Recommend repairs, replacements and other solutions.
• Develop and conduct training on safe equipment operation for customers and trainees.
• Maintain equipment inventory, tool kits, repair parts, and company vehicle.
• Support sales during calls and for new products with product management and sales teams.
• Submit reports and documentation for job tracking and timely billing.
• Promote sales of maintenance agreements, new products, spare parts and consumables.
• Arrange transportation, lodging, and meals during trips.
• Additional duties as assigned.

Job description

The Field Service Technician provides on-site services for customers, distributors, and sales through installation, training, repair and preventative maintenance of the business’ equipment. Installations range from stand-alone systems to complex system integration with manufacturing, distribution, and processing lines including installation and integration of PLCs, encoders, sensors and software. The position promotes sales of maintenance agreements, new products, spare parts and consumables. May coordinate a team of Service Technicians.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

• Assists with the installation of systems including custom applications.
• Repairs equipment at customer site.
• Provides technical assistance, via phone and email, to help troubleshoot and repair equipment, coordinates problem resolution with product services, engineering, customer service and other personnel.
• Tests and verifies electrical motors, sensors, control circuits, power circuits, and other items required to verify proper electrical wiring installation for control panels and their associated devices/motors.
• Verify mechanical and pneumatic components are properly installed.
• Recommends repairs, replacements and other solutions.
• Develops and conducts training on the safe operations of the equipment and demonstrates skills to trainees, including customers, distributors and team members.
• Maintains equipment inventory, tool kits, repair parts and company vehicle.
• Provides service support for sales during sales calls and provides support for new products, working with product management and sales.
• Submits reports and documentation and maintains necessary system information for job tracking.
• Completes system information in a timely manner to ensure accurate and timely billing.
• Promotes sales of maintenance agreements, new products, spare parts and consumables.
• Arranges for transportation, lodging, and meals during trips.
• Additional duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS / REQUIREMENTS

• Associates degree and/or certification/apprenticeship in technical, mechanical, electrical technology or engineering, computer science or related field.
• 4+ years of previous experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Routine travel either locally, nationally, and/or internationally may be required.
• Basic degree of proficiency in MS Office Suite, Outlook & Internet applications.
• Basic analytical, prioritizing, interpersonal, problem‑solving, presentation, budgeting, project management (from conception to completion), & planning skills.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills (including analysis, interpretation, & reasoning).
• Basic understanding and application of mathematical concepts.
• Ability to develop and maintain collaborative relationships with peers and colleagues across the organization, as well as, internal and external clients.
• Ability to work well autonomously and within a team in a fast‑paced and deadline‑oriented environment.
• Ability to work with and influence peers and management.
• Self‑motivated with critical attention to detail, deadlines and reporting.
• Ability to read and understand electrical drawing schematics.
• Valid Driver’s License.
• Understanding of electrical principles.
• Understanding of motor control.
• Possess a mechanical aptitude; ability to use a large variety of hand tools and basic knowledge of power tools, forklifts, welding equipment, and cutting torch.
• Ability to work overtime as necessary.

PHYSICAL ASPECTS / WORK ENVIRONMENT

• Regularly required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and talk, hear and see.
• Regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, and occasionally up to 100 pounds.
• Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
• Regularly/occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles, extreme cold & heat, risk of electrical shock, and toxic or caustic chemicals.
