What’s the role?

The Field Service Engineer Level 1 is an entry‑level field service position requiring a strong background in electronics and mechanics. Success demands dedication to learning and a rapid absorption of training material; a high percentage of the role involves technical training courses, both domestically and internationally. The FSE will also engage in on‑the‑job training, working closely with senior FSEs in customer environments. Strong interpersonal skills and effective communication are essential, as is excellent time‑management and the ability to provide technical service independently as training progresses.

Here’s What You’ll Do

• Successfully complete all assigned technical training to acquire thorough knowledge of company equipment.
• Demonstrate that technical concepts learned in training can be applied at a high standard in the field.
• Use all required administrative applications for service‑order management, spare‑parts inventory, time‑reporting, and expense reporting.
• Actively participate in on‑the‑job training, listening carefully, taking notes, and asking questions.
• Apply the CONTACT training principles and practice them in real‑world settings.
• Assist other FSEs with service‑order and inventory management as requested by the Regional Field Service Manager.
• Under supervision, provide a full range of installation services and preventive & corrective maintenance on ZEISS Microscopy systems.
• Conduct special site or system environmental analysis tests as assigned.
• Train customers on basic system operation and maintenance.
• Care for ZEISS tools and assets used during assigned responsibilities.
• Engage in personal development using the ZEISS CurioZ portal and other self‑initiated learning.
• Adhere to lab safety basics, understand risks, and respect ZEISS values and agenda.
• Other duties as assigned by manager.

Do you qualify?

• 4‑year degree or technical certificate in a technical/scientific discipline; or equivalent 3+ years experience in building, maintaining, installing, and repairing complex electromechanical systems.
• Sound knowledge of Laboratory Safety for BSL‑1, 2, and 3 environments and specimen handling of Level 3 biohazards.
• Ability to troubleshoot problems in software, electronics, optics, high voltage & vacuum, mechanical, and electro‑mechanical systems.
• Knowledge of Windows environments, word processing, and email.
• Ability to read and understand mechanical/engineering schematics.
• Proven teamwork or individual contributor success.
• Good communication skills; English required (German/French a plus).
• Strong administrative and time‑management skills.

Working Conditions And Special Demands

• Engage with customers in BSL‑2/3 facilities; may be asked to work in BSL‑4 environments.
• Travel domestically and overseas; drive company vehicle and maintain good driving record.
• Frequent overnight travel (average 50% domestic/international).
• Obtain corporate credit card.
• Participate in six‑month to one‑year formal FSE training and maintain all duties responsibly.
