Job summary

Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE) invites applications for a twelve-month research internship at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio, focused on software development for medical decision-support using Large Language Models. You will join a community of scientists and researchers to advance field-ready AI tools.

Work with established protocols (IDMT Handbook, Pararescue Handbook, JTS CPGs) and ensure reliable offline/online interactions.

Qualifications

• The candidate will hold or be currently pursuing a Bachelor's, Master's, or Doctoral Degree in Software Engineering or other eligible discipline with anticipated graduation on or before June 30, 2027.
• Postgraduates must have earned the degree within 12 months of the appointment start date.
• Citizenship: U.S. Citizen Only as stated in eligibility requirements.

Responsibilities

• Join the ORISE program to explore use of Large Language Models to enhance medics’ decision-making in challenging environments.
• Integrate LLMs with guided protocols (IDMT Handbook, Pararescue Handbook, JTS CPGs) and enable online/offline interaction.
• Develop and test a system allowing medics to access trauma and non-battlefield protocols via search and audio prompts.

Education

Bachelor's/Master's/Doctoral Degree in Software Engineering or related discipline with anticipated graduation by 6/30/2027

Postgraduate degree within 12 months of appointment start
