Reports to: Director of Engineering – Hardware Systems
We’re seeking an FPGA Engineer with demonstrated medical-device development and real-time video-processing expertise. This engineer will design, implement, and verify complex FPGA solutions for medical imaging and video systems, spanning requirements, architecture, implementation, unit verification, risk-informed documentation, and system integration. The role requires close collaboration with hardware, software, systems, quality, and regulatory teams throughout the product-development lifecycle.
Key Responsibilities:
- Design and implement digital signal processing solutions, including FIR/IIR filters and other DSP algorithms.
- Evaluate, integrate, and verify third-party IP cores within system designs.
- Develop custom digital logic to interface among IP cores and system components.
- Create and maintain efficient FPGA architectures that meet performance, power, and resource-utilization requirements.
- Architect and implement real-time video and image-signal-processing pipelines, including sensor interfaces, pixel correction, color processing, scaling, filtering, frame buffering, format conversion, and display or streaming interfaces.
- Write and maintain automation scripts for FPGA build, simulation, and verification processes.
- Perform timing closure on complex FPGA designs.
- Manage integration between logic and processing systems in FPGA system-on-chip (SoC) devices.
- Create and execute verification plans for custom logic, video-processing pipelines, and third-party IP, including simulation, test benches, coverage, image-quality evaluation, and hardware-in-the-loop testing.
- Optimize FPGA designs for resource utilization and performance.
- Debug hardware issues using logic analyzers, oscilloscopes, and other test equipment.
- Create and maintain technical documentation, including architecture specifications and design documents.
- Collaborate with hardware, software, systems, quality, and regulatory teams to translate medical-device and video-system requirements into robust FPGA designs and integration plans.
- Support medical-device system integration, design verification, traceability, risk-control implementation, anomaly investigation, and testing in accordance with applicable quality-system procedures.
Education and Experience:
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field from an accredited institution.
- Minimum of 5 years of FPGA development experience.
- Strong proficiency in VHDL and Verilog.
- Demonstrated expertise implementing real-time video, image, and digital signal processing on FPGAs.
- Experience with Xilinx and/or Intel (Altera) FPGA development tools and video-processing IP ecosystems.
- Proficiency in TCL scripting for build automation and tool customization.
- Understanding of DSP principles, including FIR/IIR filter design.
- Experience with timing analysis and constraint development.
- Expertise in the integration and verification of third-party IP cores.
- Knowledge of version control systems, including Git.
- Experience with simulation, verification methodologies, image-quality assessment, and automated regression testing for video-processing designs.
- Understanding of hardware bring-up and debug processes.
- Hands‑on experience integrating image sensors, video interfaces, memory subsystems, and DSP/ISP functions in FPGA-based products.
- Required: experience developing medical-device electronics or imaging systems within a regulated quality system, including design controls, requirements traceability, risk management, verification, and technical documentation.
- Strong knowledge of video timing, pixel formats, color spaces, frame‑rate conversion, latency, bandwidth, and image‑quality tradeoffs.
- Experience with relevant camera, display, and streaming interfaces such as MIPI CSI‑2, LVDS, HDMI, DisplayPort, SDI, or Ethernet video is highly desirable.
- Working knowledge of medical-device software and hardware lifecycle standards, including IEC 62304, IEC 60601‑1, ISO 14971, and FDA design‑control expectations, is preferred.
