Job summary

Ames Construction is seeking a skilled Heavy Equipment Technician to troubleshoot, diagnose, and repair equipment in field environments on our heavy civil projects. You will perform preventative maintenance, document repairs, and work closely with operators and site teams.

Candidates should have 3–5 years of maintenance experience on Cat and John Deere equipment, be able to read manuals, and travel to multiple project locations with occasional overnight stays; CDL preferred.

Qualifications

• Minimum 3–5 years of heavy construction equipment maintenance and repair experience preferred.
• Strong diagnostic and troubleshooting skills.
• Experience with Cat and John Deere equipment is highly preferred.
• Knowledge of hydraulic, electrical, diesel engine, and powertrain systems.
• Ability to read service manuals, schematics, and diagnostic information.
• Valid driver's license required; CDL preferred.
• Welding and fabrication experience is a plus.
• Ability to work independently with limited supervision.
• Strong communication and organizational skills.

Responsibilities

• Troubleshoot, diagnose, and repair heavy construction equipment in field environments.
• Perform preventative maintenance services, inspections, and repairs on equipment and support vehicles.
• Diagnose and repair diesel engines, hydraulic systems, drivetrain components, electrical systems, and undercarriage components.
• Respond to equipment breakdowns and emergency service calls at project sites.
• Complete equipment inspections and document repair and maintenance activities.
• Work closely with operators, foremen, superintendents, and equipment managers to identify and resolve equipment issues.
• Maintain service trucks, tools, parts inventory, and equipment maintenance records.
• Perform welding, fabrication, and component replacement as needed.
• Conduct equipment safety inspections and ensure compliance with company safety standards.
• Assist with equipment mobilization, setup, and commissioning on new projects.
• Maintain a high level of professionalism while working independently at remote project locations.
• Participate in safety meetings, training, and company programs.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
