Job Title: Field Instructor

Reports To: Program Manager

FSLA Status: Seasonal, non-exempt

Salary: $20-$24 per hour; or weekly salary $750-$1,000+ depending on camp assignments.

Position Summary: Field Instructors at Telluride Academy (TA) lead and facilitate outdoor experiential education programs for students ages 5-17. Activities include hiking, camping, kayaking, rock climbing, arts and crafts, and more. A strong commitment to risk management and fostering positive outcomes for all students is essential.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Program Facilitation

1. Plan and implement daily programming aligned with established itineraries, ensuring activities meet organizational goals and program objectives.
2. Deliver age-appropriate activities, workshops, and lessons that inspire creativity, personal growth, and learning.
3. Facilitate a range of activities, including field games, day hiking, camping, kayaking, rock climbing, arts and crafts, and more.
4. Adjust plans as needed to respond to changes in weather, participant needs, or other unforeseen circumstances while maintaining program integrity.
5. Demonstrate flexibility and problem-solving skills to ensure smooth and effective program delivery.
6. Work closely and collaboratively with co-instructors and other staff members to deliver high-quality programs throughout the summer.
7. Organize and manage weekly field reports, manage program logistics, and oversee program budgets as assigned.
8. Teach Leave No Trace (LNT) principles and foster a culture of environmental stewardship among participants.
9. Promote leadership, teamwork, and personal development through guided experiences and discussions.
10. Perform any additional duties as assigned or deemed necessary by administration to support the organization's goals and operations.

Student/Camper Engagement:

1. Cultivate a supportive and inclusive environment by encouraging teamwork, communication, and mutual respect among participants.
2. Serve as a role model, mentor, and guide for participants, helping them build confidence, resilience, and interpersonal skills.
3. Set clear expectations and model respectful, positive behavior.
4. Proactively address and de-escalate conflicts or challenges in a calm, constructive manner.
5. Utilize effective behavior management and positive discipline techniques to maintain group cohesion and engagement.

Safety & Risk Management:

1. Ensure a safe, fun, and educational environment for all participants by following safety protocols and best practices.
2. Actively supervise campers to ensure their safety and well-being.
3. Respond to minor incidents or emergencies in the field.

Qualifications:

1. Organized, dependable, and professional
2. Demonstrated selflessness in previous roles being a team player
3. Knowledge and enthusiasm for outdoor/experiential education
4. Significant prior experience working with youth
5. Strong communication skills with administrators, co-workers, campers, and parents
6. Ability to be present and cell phone-free while at work
7. Current Wilderness First Aid (WFA) and CPR certification (or ability to obtain prior to staff training).
8. Ability to pass a criminal background check and driving background check.
9. At least 21 years of age.
10. Physical ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs, be active for up to 8 hours a day, and navigate rugged terrain.
11. Valid driver's license and ability to operate program vehicles safely (if applicable).

Working Conditions:

1. Ability to work indoors or outdoors for prolonged periods of time in various weather conditions, including heat, cold, wind, and rain.
2. Willingness to work in remote, wilderness, or high-altitude environments with limited facilities.
3. Comfort with exposure to insects, wildlife, and natural elements as part of outdoor programming.
4. Ability to work flexible hours, including early mornings, evenings, weekends, and extended shifts, based on program needs.
5. Ability to travel to and from program locations, including remote trailheads or campgrounds.

Additional Requirements:

1. Proficient in leading group activities and providing instruction to diverse age groups.
2. Ability to swim and assist in water-based activities when required.
3. Capable of physical tasks such as kneeling, bending, climbing, hiking, and carrying equipment.
