Job summary

County of Napa is seeking a Field Inspection Supervisor to plan, organize, and supervise building inspections for compliance with state and county codes. You will guide inspectors, interpret complex regulations, and coordinate with contractors, engineers, and the public to ensure safe, compliant buildings.

Qualifications

• Four years as a government building inspector, with at least one year in a lead supervisory role.
• Equivalent to four years as a superintendent of building construction projects with supervision of multiple trades may substitute for one year.

About the Position

The Field Inspection Supervisor plans, organizes, assigns, supervises, and coordinates the work of staff responsible for inspecting residential and non-residential buildings for compliance with applicable State and County codes, ordinances, and regulations. This working supervisor provides technical guidance to inspectors, performs inspections of major and technically complex projects, interprets building codes and regulations, resolves inspection-related issues and conflicts, and coordinates inspection activities with other agencies, contractors, architects, engineers, and the public.

The position also plays a key role in staff development and unit operations by conducting training, evaluating performance, assisting with personnel actions, monitoring workflow, and recommending improvements to policies and procedures. The Field Inspection Supervisor exercises considerable independent judgment in addressing complex code and compliance matters and serves as a resource to the Chief Building Official, including assuming building inspection and compliance responsibilities in their absence.

Education and Experience

To qualify for this classification, an individual must possess any combination of experience and education that would likely produce the required knowledge and abilities. A desirable combination is:

Experience

Four years of experience as a government agency building inspector preferably to include one year in a lead supervisory capacity. (Four years of paid experience as a superintendent of building construction projects, which involved the supervision of several of the building trades, may be substituted for one year of the required experience.)

Education

Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade. Course work in building or construction inspection as an accredited college or university is highly desired.

License or Certificate

• Consistent with California State law must be certified as a Building Inspector. Legacy, or residential and commercial certifications in building, electrical, mechanical, and plumbing from the International Code Council. (ICC).
• Plans Examiner and/or DSA CASp certification is desirable.
• Possession of a valid California Driver's License.

*Any license, certification, or registration required for this position shall be maintained (i.e. active and in good standing) at all times during employment with Napa County. For continued employment with Napa County, you must maintain such license, certification, or registration to meet the minimum qualifications of this position.
