Job summary

Scale AI is seeking a Field Engineer to collaborate with federal public sector customers, building production-grade data pipelines and tools. You will work with Product, Engineering, and Operations to understand each customer’s use cases and deliver practical solutions.

The role blends customer delivery with product and engineering, requiring a generalist software background, problem solving, and cross-functional collaboration. An active TS/SCI clearance is required.

Qualifications

• Experience as a customer-facing engineer or in a similar hybrid role.
• Hands-on technical experience working with clients in a pre- or post-sales capacity.
• Development experience with Python, JavaScript, or other modern languages.
• A strong engineering background, ideally in computer science, mathematics, or another quantitative field.
• Strong project management and interpersonal skills.
• The ability to present credibly to both executives and front-line engineers.
• Comfort communicating across internal and external teams.
• Intellectual curiosity, empathy, and the ability to move quickly.
• Active TS/SCI clearance is required.

Responsibilities

• Build end-to-end data integrations that sync customer data to and from Scale’s platform.
• Work with customers’ engineering teams to optimize data pipelines, including API endpoint design and input/output schemas.
• Design and maintain playbooks, internal tools, documentation, and SDKs for long-term success.
• Partner with engineers and Operations to resolve blockers, debug delivery issues, and own escalations.
• Own the customer’s technical experience throughout their time with Scale.
• Collaborate with Account Executives and Product Managers on feature requests.
• Develop expertise in large language models, 2D image annotation, and API integrations.
• Represent Scale and engage with customers at major events.

Job description

As a Field Engineer on our federal AI projects, you'll work directly with our largest public sector customers to make sure their experience with Scale's technology is smooth and successful. You'll help these customers build production-grade data pipelines, working closely with our Product, Engineering, and Operations teams. This means learning each customer's use cases in depth and building the tools and documentation they need to grow.

The role sits at the intersection of customer delivery, product, and engineering. The ideal candidate is a generalist software engineer who enjoys working with clients, takes ambiguous problems and turns them into practical solutions, and collaborates closely with Product and Engineering along the way.

An active TS/SCI clearance is required.

What You'll Do

• Build end-to-end data integrations that sync customer data to and from Scale’s platform
• Work with customers’ engineering teams to optimize data pipelines, including input on API endpoint design and input/output schemas
• Design and maintain playbooks, internal tools, documentation, and SDKs that set customers up for long-term success
• Partner with engineers and Operations to resolve technical blockers, debug delivery issues, and own technical escalations from customers
• Own the customer’s technical experience throughout their time with Scale
• Work with Account Executives and Product Managers to identify customer‑specific feature requests
• Develop expertise in large language models, 2D image annotation, and API integrations
• Represent Scale and engage with customers at major events

What We're Looking For

• Understanding of DevSecOps principles, including secure software delivery, infrastructure as code, and CI/CD
• Hands‑on experience with Kubernetes and Helm charts
• Experience automating infrastructure with Ansible or similar tools
