Job summary

Kiewit is seeking a Field Engineer Intern for the Heavy Civil – Kiewit Foundations program for Summer 2027. Interns gain hands-on experience in construction management and geotechnical projects across multiple U.S. locations.

Interns will participate in field engineering, planning, scheduling, and cost control while collaborating with suppliers under the Field Operations department. Pursue Civil Engineering or Construction Management and be available May–August.

Qualifications

  • Pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree in civil engineering, construction management or related field.
  • Ability to work full-time during the summer (May–August).
  • Willingness to relocate or travel as needed.
  • Strong work ethic and initiative for safety and quality.
  • Access to construction sites in varying climates and environments.

Responsibilities

  • Field engineering, operation planning, and project scheduling support.
  • Cost control, quantity tracking, material procurement, and subcontract coordination.
  • Maintain records of job progress, costs, and material usage.
  • Plan and schedule job segments and coordinate with field teams.
  • Review plans and specifications to determine material requirements and pricing.
  • Collaborate with suppliers to facilitate material delivery and expediting.

District Overview

The Kiewit Foundations Co. self performs complex geotechnical projects across North America. We deliver creative, cost-efficient solutions that are responsive to each project’s specific site conditions. We utilize value engineering and constructability reviews, and our depth of expertise to offer constructible solutions that optimize budget and schedule. We perform these operations with our fleet of specialty equipment and the management resources of one of the top builders in the country.

We are looking for people pursuing one of the following college majors: Civil Engineering, Mining, Geotechnical Engineering, and Construction Management. These Field/Office Engineer Interns will be required to perform engineering work in connection with a wide range of underground and foundations projects that range in size, difficulty, and duration. The interns could potentially be involved in the district estimating unit, which involves quantity takeoffs, site visits, estimating the work, sitting in on estimate reviews and bid close-out. They could also be assigned to the various projects with field responsibilities.

Responsibilities
  • Field engineering, operation planning, cost control, project scheduling, quantity tracking, material procurement, contract administration, estimating & supervision of field activities
  • Performing engineering tasks requiring standard techniques and handling minor problems of a technical nature arising during construction
  • Maintaining records as required regarding job progress, costs, material usage, etc.
  • Planning and scheduling of job and/or job segments
  • Investigating problems and/or reported incidents; identifying and recommending solutions/alternatives as appropriate
  • Reviewing plans and specifications to determine material requirements (quantities and qualities), pricing of materials, etc.
  • Working with suppliers as required facilitating the handling and expediting delivery of materials
Qualifications
  • Ability to travel or relocate as needed
  • Ability to work full-time during the summer (approximately May-August)
  • Currently pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree in civil engineering, construction management or related
  • Ability to freely access all points of a construction site in a wide-ranging climates and environments
  • Highly motivated, with a demonstrated passion for excellence and taking initiative
  • Strong work ethic, willing to do what it takes to get the job done right the first time
  • Demonstrated commitment to ethics and integrity

Base Compensation:$21.00/hr -$25.00/hr
