Job description

Atlas Excavating bids and builds the work most contractors avoid: deep sanitary sewer, wet excavation, groundwater control, bypass pumping, and heavy underground utilities. We own our own equipment and lay wet utilities that foundations are built on, so we are looking for motivated Field Engineers to join our team and support daily field operations on active construction projects.

The Role

The Field Engineer will work directly on jobsites located in Indiana, supporting Foremen, Project Managers, and field crews to help ensure projects are built safely, accurately, efficiently, and in accordance with project plans, specifications, design requirements, building standards, and Atlas company processes.

This position is ideal for someone who wants to build a long‑term career in heavy civil construction. The Field Engineer will gain hands‑on exposure to both field leadership and project management responsibilities, making this role a potential springboard into future positions such as Foreman, Project Manager, Superintendent, or other leadership roles within the company.

What You’ll Do

The Field Engineer will assist with daily jobsite coordination, documentation, and project execution, including:

  • Monitor and coordinate daily construction activities with Foremen and Project Management.
  • Help ensure all phases of work comply with project plans, specifications, design standards, safety expectations, and company procedures.
  • Assist in identifying, evaluating, and communicating field problems or changed conditions.
  • Support the development, tracking, and updating of project schedules.
  • Contribute to site oversight by helping monitor work progress, crew activity, subcontractor coordination, material needs, and production.
  • Track quantities and daily production for billing, cost tracking, and project documentation purposes.
  • Assist with layout coordination, field measurements, utility conflicts, plan interpretation, and documentation of completed work.
  • Communicate clearly with Foremen, Project Managers, inspectors, owners’ representatives, subcontractors, and suppliers.
  • Help maintain accurate job records, daily reports, photos, quantities, and other project documentation.
  • Learn Atlas field operations, construction methods, safety expectations, and project management processes.
  • Support a jobsite culture focused on safety, accountability, quality, communication, and production.
Where You Will Do It

On construction sites located throughout North/North‑Central Indiana and Atlas Headquarters. Candidates seeking fully remote positions will not be considered.

What We’re Looking For
  • Minimum of three years of prior experience in a similar construction‑related role, and/or an associate or bachelor’s degree in construction or engineering‑related field.
  • Preferred degree backgrounds include Construction Management, Civil Engineering, or related programs.
  • Experience or strong interest in heavy civil, underground utility, sewer, excavation, or infrastructure construction.
  • Ability to read and understand plans, specifications, drawings, and construction documents.
  • Strong leadership, interpersonal, and communication skills.
  • Proven work ethic and willingness to learn in both field and office settings.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work effectively with Foremen, field crews, Project Managers, inspectors, and owners.
  • Comfort working outdoors on active construction jobsites in varying weather and site conditions.
  • Basic computer and documentation skills.
Ideal Candidate

The right person for this role is not looking for a desk‑only construction job. They want to be in the field, close to the work, learning how complex underground utility projects are planned, built, tracked, and completed. They are dependable, curious, organized, and willing to take ownership of details that matter.

They understand that strong construction leaders are built through experience, communication, judgment, and follow‑through.
