Job summary

The State of Florida, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, invites applications for the Associate Research Scientist-FWC position in Saint Petersburg. The role leads Fisheries Dependent Monitoring surveys (MRIP, SRFS) and oversees field supervision, data collection, QA/QC, and grant reporting.

Requires advanced degree(s) in physical/natural sciences or mathematics and substantial professional experience; preference for Florida government experience and supervisory background.

Qualifications

  • 8 years professional experience in a closely‑related biological field or laboratory is required.
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major course of study in one of the physical or natural sciences or mathematics and four years of professional experience; or
  • A master’s degree with three years of professional experience; or
  • A doctorate with one year of professional experience can substitute for the required experience.
  • Preference may be given to candidates with one or more years of working for the State of Florida or another government agency
  • One or more years of experience as a supervisor of a large team
  • Knowledge of Fisheries Dependent Monitoring data collection and analysis
  • Experience and knowledge of recreational fisheries surveys, such as MRIP
  • Previous collaboration on scientific publications and data analysis
  • Knowledge of basic coding and data management software

Responsibilities

  • Supervise statewide recreational fishing surveys and coordinate field staff.
  • Manage site and vessel registers; deliver monthly updates to the grant agency.
  • Generate sampling schedules and monitor progress toward quotas; report to grant agency.
  • QA/QC on submitted data and deliver clean data files.
  • Produce data summaries and grant reports; analyze survey performance.
  • Represent the Agency in meetings with state, regional, and national partners.
  • Assist with design and modification of survey approaches.
  • Provide guidance and supervision of regional field staff; conduct annual reviews.
  • Perform related duties and outreach activities for recreational anglers.
