Job summary

City of Columbia, SC seeks a supervising crew member to lead construction/maintenance tasks within a City department. You will supervise, coordinate, and train subordinates while ensuring safety and efficiency in daily operations.

The role requires physical work and ability to manage equipment and materials, with a focus on adhering to policies and coordinating with other divisions and outside agencies.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED.
• Three (3) years of relevant prior experience.
• Valid South Carolina Class “D” Driver’s License.

Responsibilities

• Assists in coordinating and supervising the activities of assigned City department or division.
• Supervises subordinate crew members. Includes instructing, assigning, reviewing and planning work; maintaining standards; coordinating activities; and recommending discipline.
• Reviews the work of subordinates for completeness and accuracy; evaluates and makes recommendations; offers training and assistance as needed.
• Supervises crew members in installation, construction, maintenance and/or repair work in the assigned department/division.
• Inspects infrastructure, facilities and/or grounds for maintenance needs; initiates scheduling of maintenance and repair work as necessary.
• Determines the type and quantity of equipment, materials and supplies needed for assigned projects; orders supplies and materials.
• Coordinates the use of available equipment for maximum utility and convenience.
• Coordinates and inspects the work of City work crews and contractors for compliance with policies, procedures, laws, contracts, permits, and safety standards.
• Operates trucks, light and/or heavy construction/maintenance equipment, power and hand tools as necessary.
• Applies pesticides and performs irrigation repairs; supervises proper maintenance of department tools and equipment.
• Prepares and maintains accurate work records and reports as required.
• Assists in coordinating department activities and functions with other City divisions, departments and outside agencies as appropriate.
• Assists crew members with and/or performs duties of crew members; performs duties of supervisor as required in his/her absence.
• Attends staff meetings; responds to inquiries and requests for assistance; performs general clerical work as required; and performs other related duties as assigned.
