Job summary

CDM Smith is seeking a Construction Inspector to conduct on-site inspections of construction, rehabilitation, and maintenance projects, verify compliance with design specs, and coordinate with engineers and clients. The role requires reviewing submittals, maintaining daily reports, and enforcing safety and quality standards across federal, municipal, and large commercial facilities.

Domestic travel up to 100% is expected, with potential overseas assignments.

Qualifications

• Must be a U.S. citizen.
• Able to pass a federal background check.
• Proficient in interpreting engineering drawings, specifications, and contract documents.
• Knowledge of construction processes for large commercial, municipal or federal projects.
• Strong organizational skills to balance and prioritize work.
• Excellent attention to detail.
• Familiar and comfortable to work on computers/tablets/phones.
• Strong technical writing and oral communication skills and ability to interface with contractors, engineers, and federal clients.
• Ability to work with multiple stakeholders.
• Ability to work independently in field conditions with minimal direction.
• Good interpersonal skills to cultivate relationships.

Responsibilities

• Conducts on-site inspections of construction, rehabilitation, and maintenance projects to verify compliance with approved design specifications and standards.
• Documents inspection results including deficiencies, deterioration, and required corrective actions.
• Review contractor submittals, RFIs, shop drawings, and material certifications with engineers and project management teams.
• Monitors construction progress, prepares and maintains detailed daily reports, deficiency notices, project status reports, and technical recommendations.
• Inspects and verifies construction materials and testing processes to ensure compliance with specifications and standards.
• Oversees and coordinates field construction related services, enforcing safety, environmental, quality control, and permitting requirements.
• Participates in pre-construction meetings, design reviews, safety meetings, and project closeout/punch list activities.
• Ensures compliance with guidelines and regulations including permits and safety and delivers technical files as required.
• Develops, trains, and mentors junior construction professionals, provides technical direction, and serves as a liaison between contractors, engineering staff, and client.
