Job summary

The Fiberglass Laminator Craftsman at Thorpe Plant Services, Inc. is responsible for the fabrication, repair, restoration, and finishing of fiberglass/FRP products and components.

This role performs hands-on laminating, assembly, painting, and finishing work while ensuring quality and safety standards are met. The Craftsman works closely with the Foreman, Superintendent, and Project Manager to complete project work safely, efficiently, and on schedule.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Current MSHA certification required.
  • 1+ years of fiberglass/FRP laminating or related industrial experience.
  • Hands-on experience with lay-up, resin application, surface prep, fabrication, repair and finishing.
  • Experience using hand tools, power tools, grinders, sanders and other fiberglass fabrication equipment.
  • Ability to read measurements, drawings and project specifications.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a project team.
  • Physically demanding work and ability to lift materials and equipment.
  • Strong jobsite safety understanding and PPE usage.
  • Willingness to work overtime as project schedules require.

Responsibilities

  • Fabricate, install, repair, and maintain fiberglass/FRP components per specs.
  • Perform laminating and lay-up using resins, mat, and cloth.
  • Prepare surfaces for fiberglass application and finish as required.
  • Measure, cut, fit, and assemble fiberglass materials.
  • Finish work: grinding, sanding, painting/coating, final assembly.
  • Read and interpret drawings, specs, and work instructions.

General Summary

The Fiberglass Laminator Craftsman is responsible for the fabrication, repair, restoration, and finishing of fiberglass/FRP products and components. This role performs hands-on laminating, assembly, painting, and finishing work while ensuring quality and safety standards are met. The Craftsman works closely with the Foreman, Superintendent, and Project Manager to complete project work safely, efficiently, and on schedule.

Role and Responsibilities

  • Fabricate, install, repair, and maintain fiberglass/FRP components according to project specifications.
  • Perform fiberglass laminating and lay-up using resins, fiberglass mat, cloth, and other required materials.
  • Prepare surfaces for fiberglass application, including cleaning, grinding, sanding, and other preparation methods.
  • Measure, cut, fit, and assemble fiberglass materials and components.
  • Perform finishing work, including grinding, sanding, painting/coating, and final assembly as required.
  • Read and interpret drawings, specifications, and work instructions to complete assigned work accurately.
  • Use hand tools, power tools, and specialized fiberglass/FRP equipment safely and effectively.
  • Inspect completed work to ensure it meets project specifications and quality standards.
  • Work closely with the Foreman, Superintendent, Project Manager, and other craftsmen to complete project work safely and on schedule.
  • Maintain tools, equipment, materials, and work areas in a clean and safe condition.
  • Follow all company, site-specific, MSHA, and applicable safety requirements.
Qualifications and Education Requirements
  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Current MSHA certification required.
  • 1+ years of fiberglass/FRP laminating or related industrial experience.
  • Hands-on experience with fiberglass lay-up, resin application, surface preparation, fabrication, repair, and finishing preferred.
  • Experience using hand tools, power tools, grinders, sanders, and other fiberglass fabrication equipment.
  • Ability to read measurements, drawings, and project specifications.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a project team.
  • Ability to perform physically demanding work and lift required materials and equipment.
  • Strong understanding of jobsite safety requirements and proper PPE.
  • Ability to work in industrial environments and adjust to project schedules, including overtime as needed.

Physical Requirements

  • Work is primarily performed on construction job sites, exposed to outdoor elements and varying weather conditions.
  • Must be able to work in confined spaces or elevated areas depending on the project.
  • Physical labor may be required, including the ability to lift and move equipment or materials.
  • Personal protective equipment (PPE) must be worn at all times for safety.
  • Flexibility to work extended hours or on weekends as project schedules require.
  • The employee must be able to perform the essential functions of the job with or without reasonable workplace accommodation.

The individual must also be able to wear and properly utilize appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) to work or visit within areas where it is required. This includes hard hat, safety glasses/spoggles, respirators, ear plugs, steel toed shoes, or other protective equipment as required by the work performed and location the work is being done.
