Qualifications

  • 1–3 years fiber optic splicing experience
  • Willingness to cross-train into lineman ground-hand role
  • Proficiency with fusion splicing equipment, OTDR testing, and fiber preparation tools
  • Valid driver’s license with clean driving record; ability to operate company vehicles
  • Ability to lift 50+ pounds and perform physically demanding tasks in varying weather
  • Knowledge of fiber optic cable types, connectors, splice enclosures, and telecom infrastructure
  • Commitment to safety-first culture and willingness to obtain relevant certifications

Responsibilities

  • Perform fusion splicing of single-mode and multi-mode fiber with precision to minimize signal loss
  • Prepare fiber cables, splice and test fibers, and dress fibers in enclosures
  • Conduct OTDR testing to verify splice quality and troubleshoot network issues
  • Build and maintain fiber distribution hubs, splice closures, and termination points
  • Maintain splice documentation, as-builts, and test results
  • Research and verify fiber routes in aerial, underground, and buried environments
  • Transition to lineman ground-hand responsibilities during slower splicing periods
  • Assist aerial lineman with pole installations, material handling, and equipment setup
  • Support strand installation, cable lashing, and make-ready operations
  • Operate bucket trucks and other construction equipment as trained
  • Perform ground-based safety duties including traffic control and work zone setup
  • Operate fiber jetting machines and pull cable through conduit and ducting
  • Troubleshoot and repair damaged fiber connections in the field
  • Coordinate with customers, property owners, and utility companies
  • Travel to project sites across Minnesota, Wisconsin, and surrounding states
  • Participate in on-call rotation for emergency repairs and service restoration
