Job summary

Lightpath seeks a Fiber Engineer to support the usage, maintenance, and documentation of our fiber network. You will design fiber routes and enable services such as Dark Fiber, Ethernet, and SD-WAN, collaborating with multiple teams to meet customer needs.

The role requires a 4-year engineering degree, telecom fiber experience, and proficiency with GIS data, Google Earth/KMZ, MS Office, Visio, Salesforce, and AutoCAD. NJ-based with competitive benefits.

  • Maintain customer service records in GIS and related systems.
  • Communicate effectively with internal and external customers and teams.
  • Organize workday to maximize productivity.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by manager.

Basic Function:

The Fiber Engineering Organization is responsible for the usage, maintenance, and documentation of Lightpath’s robust fiber network. Daily efforts of a Fiber Engineer will include work supporting pre-sales engineering, new customer service installation, maintenance of existing services, asset record management within our GIS database, fiber trace analysis, outside vendor management, customer requests, and other departmental needs. Will support and report to the Manager of Fiber Engineering.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Own and manage the usage of Lightpath’s Fiber Network.
  • Make decisions regarding usage of the fiber network and how it is to be leveraged to enable our customers’ success. Will include engineering fiber routes for various telecom services such as Dark Fiber, Ethernet, SD-WAN, WDM, DIA, Small Cell, and FTT services.
  • Produce creative solutions using Lightpath assets to deliver unique services for our customers’ needs supporting design criteria such as distance limitations, diversity needs, or specific routing requirements.
  • Research existing databases, files, and records for purposes of network design, fiber optimization, customer communications, and/or relocation of fiber facilities.
  • Create and provide output specifying selected fiber path and required splicing work to be performed for new fiber-based service installations, relocation of existing fiber facilities, and/or restoration of existing traffic.
  • Ensure company records are accurate by inputting and maintaining data of physical assets in our GIS database.
  • Ensure inventory of fiber usage & customer service records are accurate by inputting and maintaining circuit data in our GIS database.
  • Establish and maintain effective communications and a professional working relationship with customers both internal and external, including Lightpath service delivery, project management, circuit design, OSP construction, sales engineering, vendors, and customers.
  • Organize workday efficiently to maximize productivity by utilizing proper time management techniques.
  • Assist in the accomplishment of company objectives or needs by performing other related duties as assigned by manager.
Qualifications:
  • 4-Year Degree in Engineering or equivalent telecom fiber network experience.
  • Ability to function independently and self-motivate.
  • Strong interpersonal skills for supporting and communicating with a variety of cross functional teams.
  • Proficiency in the MS Office suite of tools including MS Visio.
  • Proficiency in usage of Google Earth & creating/managing KMZ files.
  • Experience using Salesforce.com platform is a plus.
  • Experience using GIS-based data management system is a plus.
  • Experience using AutoCad is a plus.
  • Proficient analytical, organizational, and time management skills, including the ability to effectively prioritize assignments.
  • Knowledge & experience of fiber network engineering or fiber construction practices are preferred.
  • Work experience within Telecom industry preferred.

This position is identified as being performed in/or reporting to company operations in New Jersey. The pay range at the time of posting in the specified locations is $60,000 - $85,000/year and will be eligible for overtime pay in accordance with applicable law and company policy. Pay ranges are supplied in compliance with New Jersey law. Pay is competitive and based on a number of job-related factors, including skills and experience.
