Job summary

TDS Telecom in Post Falls, ID is seeking a Fiber Construction Technician to join our Internal Construction Crew. You will perform outdoor labor for PON/fiber networks, installing buried and aerial facilities safely and per maps and locates.

Training includes an in‑house CDL program, safety training, and hands‑on exposure to bucket trucks, drill rigs, and test equipment. Expect varied weather, climbs, and paperwork done on schedule.

Qualifications

  • 6+ months experience in customer service, electrical or utility construction, or related fields.
  • Must have and maintain a valid driver's license and remain eligible for DOT requirements.
  • Ability to obtain a Class A CDL; in-house CDL certification after hire.

Responsibilities

  • Performs general construction labor in various weather conditions.
  • Assists with transportation of construction equipment to/from the worksite.
  • Places aerial and buried fiber according to maps and locate markings.
  • Uses hand tools, cable locators, and test equipment.
  • Installs enclosures, vaults, pedestals, and handholes for fiber facilities.
  • Climbs poles and uses bucket truck as needed.
  • Marks fiber facilities and completes related paperwork on time.
  • Assists with fiber splicing, repairs, and outside plant maintenance.

The Fiber Construction Technician performs the general labor associated with outside plant construction for PON/fiber optic networks, assisting with the installation of communications facilities (both buried and aerial) in accordance with state and local regulations in a safe manner.

Training

As a Fiber Construction Technician, you will have the opportunity to obtain a Class A CDL through our in‑house training program. You will attend safety training at one of our new facilities where you will also be trained on pole climbing and bucket trucks. On‑the‑job training includes exposure to various construction equipment including directional drill rigs, mini excavators, trenchers, and locators. Fiber optic training covers fusion splicing, fault detection, and exposure to OTDRs and other advanced testing equipment.

The duration of training varies based on the team assignment. Underground teams complete 3 weeks of training, with an additional week required for aerial training. Depending on market needs, prior skills, and team size, some individuals may complete only underground training while others undergo the full 4‑week program, including aerial training.

Responsibilities
  • Performs general construction labor in various weather conditions while utilizing safety fundamentals.
  • Assists with and performs the transportation of required construction equipment to and from the worksite.
  • Assists with and performs the placement of new aerial and buried fiber according to maps, staking sheets, and locate markings.
  • Uses hand tools, cable locators, and test equipment.
  • Installs and/or sets enclosures (buried and aerial) vaults, pedestals, and handholes.
  • Climbs poles, ladders, towers, and other structures as needed; uses bucket truck when required.
  • Marks/labels fiber optic and/or copper facilities.
  • Uses dispatching application and associated tools.
  • Assists with fiber splicing and repairs.
  • Assists with outside plant preventative maintenance.
  • Services, cleans, maintains, and repairs equipment.
  • Completes all related paperwork in a timely manner.
  • Provides assistance to field services technicians, as needed.
Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • 6+ months experience in any combination of customer service, electrical or utility construction, technical certification (or higher), current military service, or prior honorable discharge military service.
  • Must follow the TDS attendance guidelines in order to meet TDS's business needs including but not limited to obligations to customers.
  • Must have and maintain a valid driver's license and remain eligible for DOT requirements.

Other Qualifications

  • Must have the ability to obtain a Class A CDL. A current CDL is preferred at hire, but TDS will train and certify eligible associates through its in‑house CDL certification program after hire.
  • Physical requirements: ability to climb poles, ladders, towers, and other structures; ability to kneel, dig, lift, and pull.
  • Upon hire must pass all components of the Safety Training course curriculum.
  • Upon hire must pass customer‑specific requirements, which may include a background check administered by the customer.
  • Horizontal directional drilling experience preferred.
  • Basic understanding of telecommunication products and services.
  • Proven organizational skills and ability to multi‑task.
  • May require occasional travel.
  • Must be willing to work overtime as needed. May be required to work various/swing shifts as business needs dictate.
  • Must be able to operate vehicles with manual transmissions.
Physical Demands and Work Environment

This role involves frequent physical activity, including standing, walking, kneeling, climbing, and lifting up to 50 pounds regularly (occasionally over 100 pounds). Vision requirements include close, distance, color, and depth perception. Work conditions include outdoor weather, attics, crawl spaces, high‑risk areas such as high voltage zones, trenches, and manholes. Exposure to heavy equipment, fumes, vibration, extreme temperatures, and loud noise is common.

Pay Transparency

The pay for this position ranges from $22.62 to $41.42 per hour.
