Job summary

Qualifications

• Minimum of 3 years' commitment to public defense, with felony experience in NYS or other jurisdictions (2+ years in felony matters)
• Demonstrated litigation experience in pretrial suppression hearings and jury trials
• Strong advocacy and organizational skills to manage multiple deadlines

Responsibilities

• Provide client-centered representation from arraignments through trial, disposition or dismissal
• Lead bail advocacy, interviews, and referrals to support services
• Prepare cases with referrals for investigation, social work services, and community programs
• Conduct bail review hearings and writs of habeas corpus to secure client liberty
• Coordinate with specialized units (DNA, Digital Forensics, Decarceration, Immigration) and with supervising attorneys
• Review discovery, challenge compliance, and prepare for litigation
• Conduct pretrial hearings and trials, and prepare mitigation materials for sentencing
• Advise clients on pleas and collateral consequences, and coordinate appellate notices
