Job summary

CFD Research is seeking a talented finite element engineer to join the structural analysis team in Huntsville. You will develop and validate linear and nonlinear FEA models for aerospace structures, mentoring others and producing engineering reports for verification and design reviews.

The role requires experience with Abaqus/Ansys/NASTRAN, strong communication skills, and ability to work with cross-functional teams including Prototype, Test and Evaluation.

Qualifications

  • US Citizenship or eligibility to obtain/maintain a secret security clearance
  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering
  • Experience with Abaqus, ANSYS, or NASTRAN
  • Ability to create clear technical documentation and present results to stakeholders
  • Strong problem solving, communication, and teamwork skills.

Responsibilities

CFD Research Corporation is adding a talented finite element engineer to our growing structural analysis team. The candidate will evaluate analyze and help design metallic and composite aerospace structures.

The position is located at CFD Research’s Huntsville Headquarters, where the candidate will work closely with existing structural, fluid and thermal analysis teams to provide rapid design recommendations and assessments. The candidate is expected to interface regularly with Prototype, Test and Evaluation Division engineers located at the company’s Hollywood, AL Engineering Test Center. This will necessitate trips to Hollywood to support in-person meetings 3 times a month.

Experience with any one of the following FEA tools is required: Abaqus, ANSYS or NASTRAN. The candidate should be familiar with running on a remote HPC cluster and submitting jobs to a bash scheduler. Experience with Python is a plus, both for post-processing and macro generation.

Key responsibilities include the development and validation of linear and non-linear FEA models to assess safety margins and deflections. The candidate will mentor under multiple subject matter experts with decades of experience. The candidate shall produce engineering reports and documentation in support of requirement verification and design reviews.

Basic Qualifications
  • US Citizenship and eligibility to obtain and maintain a secret security clearance
  • Bachelors Degree in Mechanical Engineering
  • Experience with Abaqus, Ansys or Nastran
  • Ability to create clear technical documentation and present results to stakeholders
  • Strong problem solving, communication, and teamwork skills.
Desired Qualifications
  • An active secret security clearance
  • Masters Degree in Mechanical Engineering with an emphasis on FEA
  • 2+ years of FEA experience, preferably with Abaqus and Abaqus CAE
  • Experience with Solidworks
  • Familiarity with high-performance computing (HPC) and large-scale models
  • Experience with python for post processing of tabular data or the creation of automation macros
