Job summary

Windsor Charter Academy is seeking a versatile staff member to support our Garden & Farm-to-School program and school nutrition services. You will help maintain gardens, assist with meal prep, and engage students in nutrition, sustainability, and hands-on learning.

The role emphasizes teamwork with teachers, volunteers, and community members, delivering hands-on activities, demonstrations, and events that connect gardening to daily meals and wellness across our campus.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain and care for school gardens, raised beds, greenhouse areas, compost systems, and outdoor learning spaces.
  • Assist with planting, watering, weeding, harvesting, soil care, irrigation monitoring, and seasonal garden preparation.
  • Support integration of garden-grown produce into school meal programs.
  • Help coordinate volunteers, students, and community members during garden projects and events.
  • Assist with farm-to-school educational activities, taste tests, cooking demonstrations, and school wellness events.
  • Promote student engagement and positive learning experiences around gardening, nutrition, sustainability, and agriculture.
  • Support local food sourcing and, when applicable, seasonal menu integration.
  • Help maintain inventory of garden tools, supplies, seeds, and equipment, and keep garden supplies inventoried and organized.
  • Assist with data collection related to harvest totals, garden production, food waste reduction, and program impact.
  • Assist with scratch-made meal preparation, serving lines, salad bars, and kitchen setup as needed, as well as cafeteria monitoring.
  • Prepare food items according to recipes, menus, and food safety standards.
  • Wash, sanitize, and maintain kitchen equipment, utensils, work areas, and food preparation spaces.
  • Assist with properly labeling, dating, cooling, and storing food.
  • Maintain compliance with Health Department standards, HACCP procedures, and all local, state, and federal regulations related to Child Nutrition Programs.
  • Assist with receiving local deliveries and maintaining organized food storage areas.
  • Help minimize food waste and support sustainability initiatives within the kitchen and garden program.
  • Provide excellent customer service and positive interactions with students, staff, and families.
  • Foster a welcoming and positive environment for students and staff.
  • Serve as a positive role model for students during garden and cafeteria activities.
  • Support farm-to-school storytelling through photos, displays, harvest updates, and community engagement opportunities.
  • Participate in training, meetings, and professional development opportunities related to farm-to-school programming, school nutrition, gardening, and youth engagement.
  • Assist with special events, farmers' markets, volunteer days, and seasonal campus projects.
  • Perform additional duties related to the farm-to-school program as assigned.
