Job Title: Family Support Worker

Nature of Position
The Family Support Worker works closely with Indigenous families to provide family-centred support that promotes the safety and well-being of children, encourages positive parenting practices, advocates for families, and connects them with appropriate social, legal and community services.
Responsibilities
Family Support
- Provide family-centred support services, including in-home visits, to address the needs of Indigenous families.
- Assist families with internal and external referrals to appropriate programs, services and community resources.
- Provide guidance and support to families with budgeting, grocery shopping, household management and everyday life skills.
- Support families in maintaining their dignity, independence and overall well-being.
- Work with families through goal-oriented, time-limited appointments to address their individual needs.
- Support families and liaise with the Ministry of Children and Family Development (MCFD) and other service providers.
Parenting Support and Child Well-being
- Promote the safety and well-being of children by supporting families in addressing parenting challenges.
- Provide parenting tools, resources and guidance to help families navigate parenting challenges.
- Support families in strengthening parenting practices and family relationships.
- Assist families in accessing appropriate supports and services to meet their children's needs.
Cultural Support and Community Engagement
- Promote cultural awareness and a sense of belonging through activities such as sweats, sharing circles and smudging.
- Support families in connecting with KFS programs and resources, including Wellbriety, CAPC, Mental Health, Family Nights, Elders'
- Luncheons and other community events.
- Build and maintain relationships with community agencies and service providers to support families' needs.
Court and Legal Support
- Attend court hearings, family group conferences, mediations, family case conferences and family court conferences, as required.
- Assist clients in navigating criminal and family law processes, including accessing duty counsel and obtaining legal information.
- Support clients with completing legal forms and documentation, including applications for no-contact and protection orders, with guidance from legal professionals.
- Assist clients with accessing family law resources and booklets while awaiting legal representation.
- Attend bail hearings, criminal trials and sentencing hearings, as required.
- Support communication and coordination with clients' probation officers, as appropriate.
General Responsibilities
- Transport clients to and from appointments, as required.
- Work independently and collaboratively as part of a team, demonstrating reliability and self-motivation.
- Respond effectively in a fast-paced environment, including situations involving family crises.
- Maintain a flexible work schedule, including evenings and weekends, as required.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Human Service Worker diploma or Bachelor of Social Work, with a minimum of two years of experience in a related field.
- Indigenous ancestry and knowledge of Indigenous cultures and communities preferred.
- Knowledge of the Ministry of Children and Family Development (MCFD) and its services.
- Ability to work a flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends, as required.
Requirements
- Satisfactory completion of a Criminal Record Check.
- Full valid Class 5 driver's license, reliable vehicle, and satisfactory driver's abstract.
