Family Peer Support Specialist - Child Care Management

Join us to apply for the Family Peer Support Specialist - Child Care Management role at RiverValley Behavioral Health.

The Family Peer Support Specialist provides mentoring and support to parents and caregivers of children with severe emotional disabilities. This role primarily involves utilizing lived experience as a parent or caregiver of a child with a mental health and/or substance use disorder.

Essential Functions
  1. Establishes and maintains a regional support and information network for parents and families of children with emotional disabilities.
  2. Teaches, coaches, mentors, and models communication skills, advocacy, resource management, and coping skills for parents and caregivers.
  3. Assists parents in locating resources for their children and understanding their rights, advocating for clients and families as needed.
  4. Maintains timely documentation of services, including billing, in the Avatar system within 48 hours of service.
  5. Serves as an active member or consultant for children’s treatment teams, aiding in treatment plan development.
  6. Establishes and supports parent groups in the community, disseminating information and empowering leadership.
  7. Responds promptly to parent/caregiver requests via phone or letter.
  8. Attends mandatory training sessions, team meetings, and educational programs internally and externally.
  9. Fosters collaborative relationships among leadership, management, and program teams.
  10. Performs other duties as assigned.
Education and Experience
  • High School diploma or GED.
  • Must be a parent or relative caregiver with legal custody, raising or having raised a child with an emotional, social, behavioral, or substance use disability, who has been a client of at least one state-funded service for children with SED.
  • Licensure/Certification:
    • Complete core competency training through the statewide family network and understand the System of Care philosophy and Wraparound Process.
    • Pursue ongoing professional development to maintain status and meet Medicaid or SIAC requirements.
    • Current Kentucky Certification in Family Peer Support is preferred but not required.
    • Valid Driver’s License.

  • Exceptional organizational skills.
  • Willingness to work flexible hours and travel within the region.
  • Ability to maintain a non-judgmental attitude towards children with SED and their families.
  • Ability to work effectively with diverse cultural, religious, racial, and socio-economic backgrounds.
  • Flexibility in problem-solving and handling various situations.
  • Characteristics include common sense, adherence to policies and ethics, healthy boundaries, enthusiasm, teamwork, willingness to learn, and open-mindedness.
