Job description

A family-owned and operated commercial real estate investment and development firm based in New York City is seeking a Senior Accountant to support the Controller and contribute to the continued build-out of the firm’s finance and accounting function. The family has a long track record of entrepreneurial success across real estate, operating companies, and private equity investments nationwide.

This dynamic, growing real estate investment firm manages a portfolio of existing commercial real estate across various asset classes—multi-family, office, retail and industrial—as well as future real estate and real estate-adjacent business opportunities. The office is responsible for actively managing the family’s commercial real estate portfolio, as well as underwriting and identifying acquisition opportunities. The office is a collaborative environment where individuals wear multiple hats, are highly adaptable, and are passionate about building businesses, often requiring a willingness to take on diverse responsibilities and contribute to the overall vision beyond just their specific role.

This role is ideal for a technically strong and highly organized accounting professional with experience in commercial real estate and property accounting. Reporting directly to the Controller, the Senior Accountant will play a hands‑on role in supporting the accounting and financial operations across a diverse portfolio of commercial real estate assets and affiliated entities. The position will be responsible for property-level accounting, financial reporting, treasury support, systems optimization, and the continued development of scalable accounting processes as the organization grows. The ideal candidate embraces automation and emerging AI‑powered tools to improve efficiency, enhance data accuracy, and strengthen financial reporting.

Key Responsibilities
  • Support accounting and reporting across corporate, real estate, and personal entities
  • Perform monthly bank reconciliations, journal entries, accruals, and account reconciliations
  • Monitor and reconcile intercompany activity between ownership entities, management companies, and affiliated businesses
  • Support monthly, quarterly, and annual close processes
  • Assist in the preparation of monthly financial statements for multiple entities including corporate entities, real estate entities and personal entities
  • Prepare consolidated financial reporting packages for principals, including cash flow analyses and net worth statements
  • Coordinate with third‑party property managers to review monthly reporting packages, resolve accounting discrepancies, and ensure consistency in financial reporting
  • Review and validate property‑level financial statements prepared by the property management accountants across a portfolio of commercial real estate assets in Yardi, questioning discrepancies and ensuring accuracy before finalization
  • Support cash flow forecasting and liquidity reporting across the real estate portfolio
  • Review and approve distribution calculations prepared by the property management accountants
  • Review lender reporting packages prepared by the property management accountants and support ongoing loan covenant compliance and financing requirements
Treasury & Payables
  • Oversee the personal and entity bill pay process in partnership with the internal team, ensuring timely processing, appropriate approvals, and adherence to established controls
  • Assist with the tracking, reconciliation, and accounting for personal and entity bill payments, ensuring transactions are accurately recorded and properly allocated
  • Maintain segregation of duties in the bill pay process by serving as reviewer and oversight
  • Monitor cash activity and support liquidity management, including short and long‑term cash flow forecasting
  • Support treasury operations by monitoring and communicating funding needs for investments, capital commitments, and family expenditures
  • Coordinate with banks and third‑party service providers as needed
Tax & Audit Support
  • Prepare and organize tax‑ready documentation, including workpapers and supporting schedules
  • Maintain organized documentation of entity details, entity structures, and supporting organizational documents
Systems & Process Support
  • Assist in the implementation, optimization, and ongoing administration of Yardi and other accounting and reporting systems
  • Participate in system conversions, data validation, chart of accounts design, testing, and user training as needed
  • Identify opportunities to automate accounting processes and improve reporting efficiency
  • Evaluate opportunities to leverage AI tools and emerging technologies to streamline recurring accounting tasks, improve reporting workflows, and support scalable processes
  • Design and maintain standardized folder structures for accounting and finance documentation by entity, property, year, month, and function
  • Coordinate with the Controller to ensure documentation standards align with internal controls and audit readiness
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required
  • 4–7 years of progressive accounting experience within commercial real estate investment, development, or property management
  • Strong experience with commercial real estate and property accounting, including multi‑entity financial reporting and property‑level accounting
  • Proficiency with Yardi required
  • Experience participating in the implementation, migration, or optimization of Yardi or another real estate ERP/accounting platform strongly preferred
  • Experience working with a family‑owned business, family office, or entrepreneurial real estate investment firm preferred
  • Strong understanding of GAAP, real estate accounting principles, financial reporting, and internal controls
  • Experience preparing property financial statements, reconciliations, budgets, cash flow reporting, and lender reporting
  • Demonstrated ability to apply logical thinking to define problems, collect pertinent data, establish facts, draw valid conclusions, and recommend appropriate solutions
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to collaborate effectively with principals, external advisors, property managers, lenders, and the broader team
  • Highly organized with exceptional attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple entities and competing priorities
  • Proactive, resourceful, and committed to continuous process improvement
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and the Microsoft Office Suite
  • Familiarity with AI tools, automation, and emerging technologies is preferred, particularly where they can be used to improve accounting workflows, reporting efficiency, and scalability
