Description
About the Position

Warner Norcross + Judd LLP is seeking a Senior Counsel to join our Family Law Practice Group in our Kalamazoo office. This position offers an excellent opportunity for an attorney who enjoys litigation and client advocacy and is interested in building a long‑term career in family law. While prior family law experience is preferred, it is not required. We welcome candidates with at least 3 years of litigation experience in areas such as criminal law, prosecution, or other courtroom‑focused practices who are looking to transition into family law.

About The Opportunity

Working closely with an experienced family law attorney, the Senior Counsel will represent clients through all stages of domestic relations matters, including divorce, child custody and parenting time disputes, child and spousal support matters, paternity actions, post‑judgment proceedings, and other family law issues. The position offers meaningful courtroom experience, with regular opportunities to appear at hearings, mediations, settlement conferences, and other court proceedings while maintaining direct responsibility for client relationships from intake through resolution.

Responsibilities will include:

  • drafting pleadings and motions,
  • conducting legal research,
  • negotiating settlements,
  • managing discovery, and
  • providing compassionate, practical counsel to clients during challenging and often emotional circumstances.

As part of our collaborative Kalamazoo office, the attorney may also have the opportunity to assist with basic estate planning and trust and estate matters, providing additional variety and professional development. Candidates should be able to work in the Kalamazoo office at least two days per week. At Warner, we recognize that exceptional attorneys perform their best when they have the flexibility and support to maintain a healthy work‑life balance. This position is designed with a target of approximately 1,200 annual billable hours, providing the opportunity to develop a sophisticated family law practice without the demands of a traditional high‑billable‑hour environment. No portable book of business is required.

About You

The ideal candidate will possess:

  • At least 3 years of litigation experience;
  • Strong written and oral advocacy skills;
  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and case management abilities;
  • A genuine interest in helping clients navigate complex family law matters with professionalism and empathy;
  • The ability to work collaboratively while managing matters independently; and
  • Admission to the State Bar of Michigan, or the ability to become licensed in Michigan.
