Job summary

University Settlement Society of New York seeks a Success Mentor to support chronically absent students. You will meet with mentees weekly, provide academic support, connect families to resources, and coordinate with teachers and school staff to track progress.

Qualifications include a Bachelor's degree in arts, education, or counseling (HS diploma acceptable) and at least 2 years working with youths from diverse backgrounds; bilingual Spanish a plus. This part-time role runs Mon-Fri, 9am-3pm.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree or higher in a related field preferred; HS diploma acceptable.
• At least 2 years' experience working with youth from diverse backgrounds.
• Experience with conflict resolution, crisis counseling, and de-escalation strategies.
• Strong organizational, written, and verbal skills; team collaboration.
• Bi-lingual Spanish is a plus.

Responsibilities

• Meet individually with assigned mentees for 5–10 minutes weekly.
• Provide academic support during classroom push-ins.
• Connect mentee and family to internal and external resources.
• Communicate with parents/guardians about progress regularly.
• Coordinate with teachers weekly and monitor major projects/assessments.
• Review weekly attendance reports with School Director and Social Worker.
• Help mentees define goals addressing absenteeism and SEL needs.
• Support Attendance team with referrals and transitions between classes.
• De-escalate situations and support SEL activities to return to class.
• Maintain accurate records including attendance data.

They are caring adults that support students and help them reach their educational goals.RationaleOne in five New York City students is chronically absent, missing more than 18+ days of school during the school year. Missing school drastically affects a student's learning and outcomes in academics and connectedness with their community.Research shows that chronically absent students who have been assigned a Success Mentor gain, on average, attend 13+ days of school compared to the year prior. The significant jump helps students exit chronic absenteeism.
