Job summary

University Settlement Society of New York seeks an assistant to support group leaders in an after-school program in the Lower Manhattan/ Brooklyn area. You will help with classroom activities, manage behavior, and facilitate theme-based projects for children under 13.

Responsibilities include supervising arrivals, snacks, and dismissals; maintaining supplies; and liaising with families and staff. 25 hours per week, with a part-time schedule after school.

Qualifications

• Associate degree or higher in child development or elementary education.
• Experience working with children under 13 years old.
• Bilingual abilities in English and another language preferred.

We infuse a commitment to civic engagement, equality, and communal action into each of our programs, which include early childhood education, youth development, healthy aging, mental health and wellness, English classes for adult immigrants, community centers, and the arts.Responsibilities:In consultation with and approval from the DYCD program Director will support group leaders and program aidesn assigned unit by providing classroom assistance when needed, assisting with participant behavior issues, supporting with classroom facilitation of activities, acting as a liaison between group leaders and program managementSupport assigned unit in planning and implementing theme-based projects and developmentally appropriate activities.Maintain positive, cooperative working relationships with host school, parents, staff and children.Strictly adhere to University Settlement policies and procedures, and Department of Health guidelines.Maintain professional standard of conduct i.e. hold in strict confidentiality employee and youth information and program files.Responsible for supervising arrival, snack and dismissal of assigned unit.Responsible for maintaining an inventory of program supplies and with approval from Director order supplies.Other duties (including Group Leader responsibilities- see below) as Assigned by the Director.Group Leader Responsibilities:Design and implement innovated, quality educational and recreational activities for youth participantsActively participate in program-wide or division-wide activitiesSupervise homework and other in-class activitiesDemonstrate appropriate communication with families, teachers, staff and childrenAttend regular staff meetings and trainingsTrack attendance, performance and behavior (positive and negative) through accurate record keepingDesign, implement lesson plans that promote monthly themesCreate a classroom environment that promotes working, learning and creating.Work collectively with on-site specialistOrganize special events as necessaryOther duties as assigned by supervisorQualifications:Associate degree in child development, Elementary Ed. or related field or H.S. Diploma & two years direct experience working with children under 13 years of age.Experience working with parent groups i.e. volunteer groups, PTAs, AmeriCorps team etc.Familiarity working with youth in a variety of settingsAbility to work efficiently and effectively under pressureBilingual (English& Spanish/Cantonese/Mandarin) preferredExcellent organizational skills; ability to coordinate multiple tasks and responsibilities,Excellent interpersonal and verbal and written communication skills, “Next Person In Charge” when supervisor is unavailable.Must be able to support Site Supervisor in maintaining the integrity of the program and established relationships with partners.Work Schedule: Partial Year Part Time, Monday - Friday, 1:00pm - 5:45pm, 25 hours per weekWe are committed to building a diverse and inclusive community.
